This paper proposes a seismic retrofitting technique for exlsting R / C buildings by atIaching steel bracing frames しo the col − umns projected from the exterior walls of buildings ・ Two types ofthe experimental parameters were focussed in this paper . One is the joint technique between 巳he retrofittin . g steel columns ( beam )and the RIC celumn ( beam ) . The other is whether or not to anchor the base ofthe steel columns to the foundations ofR 〆 C frames . The cyclic lateral loads were applied tQ the model specimens , which were about l13 the size ofRIC frames in schQol buildings under a constant axial load in the experlments . The experiments and the analyses leaded the following conclusion . The full lateral load carrying capacity was developed in an the speCimens regardless of the joint techniques be 【ween the steel frames and the R 〆 C frames ifthe bases ofthe steel frames were anchored Io the foundations Qf RIC frames .
