This qualitative research examines kinship terms in the Tamiang language and the strategies of selection of the terms by its speakers. The data for this research were obtained through questionnaire, and interview from eight informants living in Bendahara Sub-District, Kejuruan Muda Sub-District, Karang Baru Sub-District, and Seruway Sub-District, Aceh Tamiang Regency, the Aceh Province. Observation was also done on the use of some of the kinship terms directly by the people in the speech community. This observation took place while the authors were socializing with the speakers in the research location. The results showed that the kinship terms in the Tamiang language are based on consanguinity and affinity. The kinship terms in the language also refer to birth order. Then, the strategies of the selection of kinship terms in the Tamiang language are based on kinship, age, gender, and descent, especially in terms of a speech event. Viewed role relationships, the terms addressed to men/women in the third layer of vertical relationships are not different. The horizontal relationship indicating the position of siblings and wife/husband is equal. The horizontal role relationship of cousins in the Tamiang language is limited to the third order. This study is very urgent since the study on kinship terms in the Tamiang language has not been conducted comprehensively before. Complete terms used to address family members in the Tamiang language are provided in this study, and it can be one of the resources for further research in the same field of study.
The Indonesian government has adapted the genre-based approach designing curriculum, thus both English teachers and students need to master the genre aspects: the objective or social function of a text, text structure, and language features. This study aimed at describing the rhetorical pattern of Irwandi Yusuf – Nova Iriansyah’s posters during the gubernatorial election in 2017. The object of this study was the strategies used to convince the argument or namely rhetorical pattern. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative research. To obtain the data the researchers used document as an instrument in this study. The result of this study revealed that the posters applied ten strategies: form-based strategy, emotion-based strategy, attention management strategy: use of dramatic statement, using repetition in the form of image and slogan, sketch model participation, detailed benefit change, self-efficacy realized via image, offer further information or services strategy: indirect offers, use slogan, refers to a broader picture, refer to the legal status of the campaign. These strategies that were implemented in the candidates’ poster was to convince the message relied on the poster to the target readers. Further, the strategies implied have followed some strategy offered by Barron (2012). Therefore, different advertisement, as well as a poster from the different region, have a different pattern in organizing the ideas and in convincing the target readers. In conclusion, by exploring the rhetoric of the local advertisement, it can expand the material of teaching text structure, language feature and social function of the advertisement text from a different region or country due to the genre is socially constructed.
Film has become a more modern means of human’s life depiction than novel or any other written literary work because of its ability to present in audio-visual form. One of the film’s essential elements is intrinsic, the elements that interlink and build the film itself. This research centres on the intrinsic elements in The Paddington (2014) film using a structural approach. Moral value is also being discussed in this research using a separated theory by Linda and Eyre (1997). This research is contributing to the richness of current literary work research while simultaneously giving a support to upcoming and ongoing studies. This research analysed the data using descriptive qualitative method developed by Miles and Huberman (2013). Prior to this, the data had been collected using Creswell’s (2012) note-taking technique. The finding of this research discovered five intrinsic elements and twelve moral values in this film. While the intrinsic elements consist of theme, plot, character and characterization, setting, and point of view. More than 10 classifications of moral values were recorded in this study.
Numerous studies have investigated the importance of slang in linguistics in various media, including novels. The dominant works on this subject have focused solely on the structural explanation of slang, leaving out its sociological context and meaning. Given the nature of slang itself as a pure informal language, studies about the semantic meaning of slang must be essential. This research looked into the slang words and expressions in a true-crime novel entitled ‘Black Mass’ by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill in 2000. The goal is to discover the semantic meaning of slang words and expressions in the novel using the qualitative method and Mattiello’s hearer-oriented (2008) theory as the underlying theory. We applied the documentary method to retrieve the data and further analyzed it using Miles et al. (2014) theory. Heavily influenced by the setting of South Boston and its crimes, Black Mass data indicated that this novel’s slang is primarily attributed to freshness and novelty. Subsequently, we found evidence of the novel’s use of desire to impress and faddishness, playfulness and humor, and impertinence properties. Color and musicality are this novel’s least common categories of slang, with only four occurrences in the entire manuscript. Given that the novel’s literature cover is still scarce, it is hoped that these findings are helpful to those who are interested in studying and researching the semantic area.
