Fruits and vegetables contain a variety of phytochemicals, including flavonoids, which have antioxidant and anticancer properties. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antiproliferative effects and synergistic interactions of a variety of flavonoids in Hepa‐1c1c7, a mouse liver cancer cell line, and LNCaP, a human prostate cancer cell line. Aglycone flavonoids, such as quercetin, kaempferol, and naringenin (at 12.5 to 50 μM), inhibited cancer cell proliferation in both cell lines in a dose dependent manner without cytotoxicity. In contrast, glycone flavonoids (rutin, quercetrin, and naringin) did not inhibit cell growth. Significant synergistic antiproliferative effects were demonstrated in both cancer cell lines when flavonoids were provided in combination treatments. These results suggest that combinations of flavonoids, which are naturally present in whole fruits and vegetables, are more effective in cancer cell growth inhibition than the individual flavonoids.

Overall physician adherence to blood pressure guidelines was significantly higher for the nonsenior group than for the senior group. Similarly, control of blood pressure was better in the nonsenior group. However, no significant relationship between overall adherence scores and blood pressure control was found in either group. In nonseniors, one factor grouping was significantly correlated with blood pressure control. Future studies should evaluate the process-of-care criteria to determine if and how they are related to blood pressure control in senior patients.
This article reports the results of the first phase of a longitudinal study of 568 public high schools in Illinois and Iowa in which the relationships among three common secondary school scheduling types and average composite scores on the ACT Assessment were examined. Preliminary findings suggest that merely adopting a different scheduling approach without engaging in any additional reform initiatives within a school will have little effect, if any, on student achievement.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
