of the mini-tracheostomy pan reduces indirect costs associated with sterilized reprocessing and unlike commercial airway kits can be reused. 2 The mini-tracheostomy pan is highly portable owing to its size. Our institutional practice calls for residents to have a minitracheostomy pan carried to all tenuous airway consults and left at bedside for patients with any airway concern. A minitracheostomy pan also resides in the ambulatory and inpatient recovery rooms. The traditional large and heavy tracheostomy pan discourages routine use. Furthermore, the bulky size of traditional pans often results in them being stowed inconsistently and in inconspicuous spaces preventing ready access in emergencies, whereas the mini-tracheostomy pan lacks this real-estate burden. With improvements in anesthetic technique and equipment, procedures involving the upper airway continue to transition to the outpatient clinic setting. [3][4][5] Though demonstrating a durable safety profile, transitioning from the operating room requires assistance from staff not usually familiar with surgical instruments in an emergency airway event. 6 Likewise, emergent airways occur in less than ideal environments like the emergency department, wards, or the postanesthesia recovery unit where support staff is unfamiliar with the procedure and resources are inconsistent. An inexpensive instrument set with easily identified instruments and small enough to be stowed in a conspicuous space of convenience like the mini-tracheotomy pan is highly advantageous in these environments. In conclusion, the mini-tracheotomy pan is a practical equipment set able to be implemented in any practice setting to improve patient safety and cost of care.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
