Finite element analysis of stub cantilever plate with varying thickness considering transverse shear deformation and elastic deformation of built-in edge is presented and applied to strength of spur gear teeth. Bending moment at built-in edge and deflection of both uniform plates and gear teeth are calculated and illustrated. The results show close agreement with experimental ones. It is examined that well-known Wellauer’s moment image method gives good approximation of moment at the root except in case of corner point loading. Further application of the analysis is developed to longitudinal load distribution on the contact line on spur gear teeth caused by misalignment error showing good agreement with experimental results by Niemann and Reister. The present method can be applied to strength of helical gear teeth.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
