This research was intended to see the phenomena of students capability in producing products of their language target which was English. This was purposed to observe and to find their errors in producing writings. The result then could be used as reflection to improve their skill in writing specifically in parts of speech. From the analysis, it was found out that the errors found in the students writing were dominated by noun with the percentage of 22%, followed by pronoun 19%, adjective 17%, verb 14%, conjunction 14%, adverb 8%, preposition 6%, and lastly interjection 0.2 %. The data then analysed by considering the analysis in error analysis and found out that 33% error in misordering, 23% error in omission, 22% error in misformation, and 22% error in addition. This research showed that error which appear the most was dominated by misordering error and noun in the aspect of parts of speech. The possible cause of how the errors could happened was because of the influence of intralingual transfer. Students cannot differentiate between their experience in using grammar of source language and target language. Thus, the product of target language that provided by the students met errors.
The present research evaluated EFL perspectives about contextual clues in reading comprehension at different proficiency levels. The data analysis using qualitative descriptions with frequencies and percentages was employed for 38 intermediate-level students and 25 advanced-level students in the university level through teaching contextual clues in reading comprehension with an experimental design. The results proved that students' proficiency in reading ability could be demonstrated by their use of idiomatic expressions, indirect language, direct language, series of words, comparison, synonym, tone, situation, mood, reference, restatement, preposition, cause-effect, modification, and example. Advanced students with a high level of vocabulary, grammar, and decoding skills were better able to utilize many contextual clues than intermediate students. Thus, reading ability was strongly correlated with the ability to infer word meaning from contextual clues.
This research was aimed to find out the subject-verb agreement error made by the second semester students of Law Faculty UNIKA Santo Thomas. From the findings, 27% of the instruments answered by the students were identified error. There were 4 kinds of error made by the students in constructing subject-verb agreement. They were omission error, addition error, misformation error, and misordering error. In omission error, there were 26 errors occurred. In addition error, there were 5 errors occurred. In misformation error, there were 54 errors occurred. In misordering error, there was 1 error occurred. Among all of the errors that had been identified, misformation error was the most dominan error faced by the students. Based on the analysis, the possible cause of error was because of the students did not understand well about the construction of the simple present tense mastery. Although only 27% instrument was identified error, it was considered that the students’ lack of knowledge in structure could give serious impact to their writing. It was suggested that the students need to enrich their knowledge at least in the mastery of the simple present tense, specially in the construction of subject-verb agreement. In other hand, the faculty need to make extra class for the English subject to give the students more chance to enhance their English knowledge. This would support the vision of UNIKA Santo Thomas in achieving International Level University.
This research was to investigate Indonesian teachers’ beliefs about the application of oral corrective feedback in Indonesian students’ EFL classrooms. It was limited to oral corrective feedback given for lexical, phonological, and syntactical errors in English conversation class. The participants of this research were 36 English teachers and 65 Indonesian students of English as a foreign language. This research utilized both qualitative and quantitative approaches, including the use of a close-ended questionnaire, semi-structured interview, and audio-recording to find the effectiveness of oral corrective feedback on students’ errors in speaking skills. The data analysis revealed: (1) the grammatical errors in students’ oral proficiency, (2) the most type of English teachers’ oral corrective feedback, (3) the students’ uptake in speaking skills, (4) the analysis of the use of oral corrective feedback, (5) the kinds of the students’ error based on English teachers’ experiences, (6) the students’ self-awareness of language errors, (7) the way of English teacher when delivering oral corrective feedback, (8) the students’ reasons to use oral corrective feedback based on English teachers’ beliefs, and (9) English teachers’ motivations to use oral corrective feedback. These findings suggested that English teachers should understand the students’ diverse needs, concerns, and expectations toward error correction according to their level of language proficiency.
This study aimed to analyze the discourse on the meaning of love that arose from the mood in the twelve stories “Love Never Gets Old” by Benny Arnas in 2014. The mood of the story was analyzed based on various points of view of the characters that influenced the discourse in the story. Genette's Narrative Theory regarding mood was the main key to uncovering the most prominent discourse so that the meaning of the text could be carried out in an orderly manner. The mood was useful in the meaning of the text to determine the position of the narrator in each story character. The results of this study indicated that the most prominent meaning after determining the storyteller, the scene, and the form of speech was about the distance between the narrator and the reader of the work, which influenced the discourse on the meaning of love. The most dominant view in this collection of stories was “I", which correlated with the character Samin. Based on the dominant point of view, love has four types, namely love for fellow human beings, love for property and God, and a form of love for oneself. The results of the data analysis revealed that the meaning of love that emerged was Samin's love for himself.
