Each individual has an identity. Identity is a differing character from individual characteristics or group characteristics of which the divergent element is very meaningful for them. Indonesia is known as a plural country with various ethnicities. Beside the diverse ethnicity composition, Indonesia also has ethnic Chinese who are largely perceived as 'immigrant' since the Dutch colonial era. For generations the Chinese has been living with a lot of issues, particularly its relations with the Indonesian society in general. These Chinese descendants have suffered from identity crisis due to the rejection to become part of the larger Indonesian community, despite the effort to assimilate them. Although identity as an individual is attached, environment and nationhood character contribute significantly to its development. Against this background, this study analyses the cultural orientation of Chinese Indonesians to understand the dynamics of their identity development.
As one of the requirements for obtaining a bachelor's degree, college students are required to make an undergraduate thesis. There are many challenges and obstacles that college students must face that will affect their well-being. However, it does not prevent college students for completing their undergraduate thesis. This is due to the gratitude response in the undergraduate thesis process. Thus, this study aims to investigate the role of gratitude on well-being among college students who are working on their undergraduate thesis. Researchers hypothesize that individuals who have high gratitude will tend to have high well-being as well. This research was conducted on the 388 final-year college students aged 21-25 years who are currently pursuing higher education at universities in Jakarta. This research used a cross-sectional quantitative method with the sampling techniques using purposive sampling and convenience sampling. Data was collected through online self-reportbased questionnaires about gratitude and well-being. From the research that has been conducted, it was found that 70.4% were women, 62.4% were 21 years, and 83% were in 7 th semester. Through simple linear regression test, it was found that gratitude contributed 38.4% to well-being (p = 0, 00 <0.05) and a factor that has a greater role on well-being is the appreciation of constant life experiences. Based on the multiple linear regression test, it was found that the appreciation factor for constant life experiences has a greater role in positive emotions, engagement, positive relationships, meaning, accomplishment, health, and overall well-being. Meanwhile, the appreciation of all aspects and parts of life has a bigger role in negative emotions and loneliness.
Ethnic Chinese are one of the minority groups in Indonesia who often receive discriminatory treatment. However, despite receiving continuous discrimination, the Chinese still "survive" and acculturate with other ethnic groups. The acculturation pattern has four categories (a) integration (sense of belonging to the original culture and current culture is high); (b) assimilation (sense of belonging to low native culture and high current culture); (c) separation (sense of belonging to high native culture and low current culture); (d) marginalization (sense of belonging to the original culture and current culture are all low) (Berry & Hou, 2016). This study aims to highlight the pattern of Chinese ethnic acculturation in Jakarta. The research method used is correlational quantitative method. The subjects are students at one of the universities in Jakarta, with the selection of samples using a convenience sampling technique. Data was collected using Google forms with 15-20 minutes to complete. Subjects who recognized themselves as ethnic Chinese totaled 115 people out of 277 submitted answers. The results of the study show that the national identity of all participants has a high value, meaning that the participants of this study have a national identity that does not need to be doubted. This can also be seen from each dimension that supports the national identity variable, as well as the acculturation variable which tends to be high in value. In the grouping of acculturation patterns, the most chosen is integration, which means that participants value the new culture highly, in this case, Indonesian culture and also highly value the original culture, in this case, the Chinese ethnic culture.
