A 20‐year retrospective review of 305 consecutive ovarian teratomas diagnosed in the surgical pathology department of the Kings County Hospital is presented. All but 10 cases represented the benign cystic variety of this tumor. One case of benign solid ovarian teratoma and 9 cases of malignant ovarian teratomas were also encountered. The laterality, age incidence, size, and gross and microscopic description of these tumors are discussed in considerable detail, as is the distribution of structures found within the benign cystic variety. Brief mention also is made regarding the incidence of struma ovarii, pregnancy, torsion, intraperitoneal rupture, and coincidental lesions found in association with ovarian teratomas.

LTHOUGH MANY REPORTS H A V E BEEN PUB-A lished on ovarian teratomas, the literature published to date, with only 2 notable exceptions, is replete with studies of a single case or, at most, several cases which present variations on the central theme of teratomas of the ovary. This paper presents an intensive study of 305 cases of teratomas of the ovary received in the surgical pathology department of the Kings County Hospital from 1950 to 1969.
MATERIALS AND METHODSThe surgical pathology files at the Kings County Hospital from 1950-1969 were reviewed, and the records of all ovarian tumors diagnosed as teratomas were carefully examined. Consequently, a total of 305 consecutive and previously unreported cases (with one exception) have been accumulated for the purpose of this study. The number of paraffin blocks from which the slides were prepared vaned from 1 to 15 per tumor. However, only those cases with a minimum of 5 or more slides available for examination were reviewed his tologically. Those sections thought to contain bone or teeth were first submitted for decalcification, and the overwhelming majority of slides readily accessible for histologic study were stained
