The aim of this work was to study the differences between the right- and left-visual cortices in relation to eyedness in healthy subjects. Ocular dominance was determined by means of the near-far alignment test. To assess visual cortical areas, the right and left sagittal scenograms of cranium by magnetic resonance imaging were used. To calculate the visual cortex areas by using scenograms, Cavalieri's method was used. In the subjects with right-eye dominance, the right visual cortex was larger than the left visual cortex, and vice versa in the subjects with left-eye dominance. The right and left cuneal areas were found to be larger in males than in females. In light of these results, it was concluded that the human eyes are predominantly controlled by the ipsilateral visual cortex.
In this clinical study, to determine the therapeutic efficacy of interferon (IFN) treatment for Peyronie's disease, we applied interferon alpha-2A (IFN alpha-2A) intralesionally in the treatment of Peyronie plaques in 15 patients and results were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Patients whose plaque sizes were 0.5 and 1 cm responded better to the treatment. There was about a 90% lessening in the sizes of the plaques of 1.5 cm, 83.3% of 2 cm, as the ones which were 0.5 cm and 1 cm disappeared completely after treatment. As a conclusion, the treatment of Peyronie's disease with IFN alpha-2A is effective and side effects are minimum.
A 68-year-old woman with progressive visual loss and exophthalmos in her right eye had been operated on for a mass in her right calf 3 years earlier.Imaging showed a huge mass invading the orbital structures and temporal pole. The presumptive diagnosis was a malignant orbital tumor. The tumor was resected totally and eroded tissues such as the lateral rectus muscle and dural compartments were repaired. The histological diagnosis was a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). The patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged 8 days after surgery. Two years later she died from a liver tumor. Few MPNSTs involving the orbit have been reported.
PurposesThe normal limits of spleen size must be known in order for pathological changes to be noticed. The aim of this retrospective study is to determine the normal limits of spleen size in healthy children and to reveal their relation to sex, age, body height and weight.Patients and methodsThree hundred and ten children (150 girls and 160 boys) between 0–16 years of age in Eastern Anatolia Region who had normal spleen ultrasound appearances were included in this study. The greatest longitudinal distance of the spleen from the dome to the tip (splenic length) measured at the hilum in the coronal plane was obtained by ultrasonography.ResultsThere was no significant difference between the sexes in children. Also, no statistically significant differences were found between the two sexes in any age group for splenic length (t-test, p > 0.05). Therefore, all data were rearranged without being separated according to sex. The correlation analysis has shown a positive and significant correlation between splenic length and age, body height, and weight, with high correlation coefficients (r > 0.80). Splenic length showed the strongest correlation with body height.ConclusionIn children clinically suspected of organomegaly, splenic length can be used to assess organ size. The presented data can be applied to routine ultrasonography examinations.
Sex and handedness differences in the volumes of cerebral ventricles were studied in 20 right- and 21 left-handed subjects. To assess the volumes of cerebral ventricles, Cavalieri's method was used using MRI. In right-handers, the volume of the lateral ventricle was higher in the right side than in the left side, but, in left-handers, it was higher in the left side than in the right side. The volumes of right-lateral and third ventricles were larger in right-handers than in left -handers. There were no sex related differences in terms of the volumes of right- and left -lateral, third, and fourth ventricles. These results suggest that left-handedness is an important factor reducing the sizes of all the brain ventricles.
