One application of either an inorganic or an organic sunscreen reduced the erythema caused by UVB during a day with physical activity and bathing. After 8 h the sunscreens still provided approximately 43% of the initial protective effect. This might simulate what happens during a day at the beach.
Objective measurements of skin erythema and water content after UV exposure were in good agreement with the subjective assessments of erythema, but showed considerable interpersonal variation.
Differences in sun exposure patterns exist between children from different areas and may be the background for higher skin cancer incidences in urban populations.
UVR exposure was generally high among this study population, however, vitamin D levels still dropped below the recommended level during winter for most participants. Differences in UVR exposure between the groups did not result in differences in vitamin D levels.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
