In this paper, we will present the process of developing a resource that we consider to be useful for both native and non-native college students in the process of writing Portuguese academic texts: a BERT-powered Writing Assistant for academic purposes in European Portuguese. The Writing Assistant includes two main components: a phrase bank, that will be created using open scientific data in the form of scientific papers found in repositories, and a search engine, that uses BERT models for semantic searches. To create the phrase bank we will loosely follow the methodology developed by John Morley, creator of the Academic Phrasebank of the University of Manchester. The phrase bank will be based on 40 scientific papers taken from the repository of University of Minho. The corpus will be initially annotated, using some of the categories proposed by Morley, then the categories will be revised to better represent the reality of Portuguese academic discourse. The annotated phrases will then be simplified and stripped of any particular academic content. This phrase bank will "feed" the search engine. The search engine works with BERT machine learning models that allow us to make semantic searches. Students would just have to write a word, expression or sentence in the search bar to find equivalent or similar expressions on our phrasebank, even if the user has little to no knowledge of the vocabulary used in academic discourse, because Bert models are able to infer semantic context and find relevant results.
Under the scope of an interdisciplinary approach of Discourse Analysis, this article focuses on Estado Novo's (1926Novo's ( -1974 presidential inaugural addresses. We will be working under the hypothesis that presidential speeches (as well as all other institutional interventions) were aligned with the ideology of the dictatorial regime. Our work examines the global discursive strategies and the local manipulative strategies (Charaudeau, 2009) found to be indicative of manipulation. This article has been divided in three parts to focus on the discursive strategies of legitimacy, credibility and audience engaging. We have concluded that (1) the legitimacy of the President of the Republic's status (as well as the rework of the speaker's institutional ethos) serves as the basis of the manipulation in these speeches; (2) negative emotions are created to engaged the audience; (3) the image and credibility of the speaker are a result of local manipulative strategies; (4) the different manipulative strategies follow the prototypical structure of popular tales of adventure; and (5) the manipulative agenda of these strategies changes over time. palavras-chave:manipulação; argumentação; discurso presidencial; discurso de tomada de posse; ethos.
Abstract:Under the scope of Discourse Analysis, this article analyses the construction of an authority presidential ethos (Amossy, 2010;Maingueneau, 1999) of the President of the Republic in 6 presidential inaugural addresses given during the Estado Novo. This study uses a qualitative approach to focus on the deontic modality (linguistic categories, obligation source, target and object) and its analysis falls into two headings: a) the President's duties and b) the People's duties. We have concluded that distinct and multiple images of authority (that serve Estado Novo's political and ideological agenda) are built of and/or by the President.
