The weighted list, known popularly as a `tag cloud', has appeared on many popular folksonomy-based web-sites. Flickr, Delicious, Technorati and many others have all featured a tag cloud at some point in their history. However, it is unclear whether the tag cloud is actually useful as an aid to finding information. We conducted an experiment, giving participants the option of using a tag cloud or a traditional search interface to answer various questions. We found that where the information-seeking task required specific information, participants preferred the search interface. Conversely, where the information-seeking task was more general, participants preferred the tag cloud. While the tag cloud is not without value, it is not sufficient as the sole means of navigation for a folksonomy-based dataset.
Thermoplastic tape placement opens the possibility of a fully automated composite production. The resulting quality is highly dependent on the thermal history during consolidation. This article focuses on the thermal modelling of a tape placement system employing a nearinfrared laser. A nonlinear two-dimensional finite element model is presented for a carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic (AS4/PEEK) composite placement process using a conformable roller. The relative influence of roller geometry, roller temperature and thermal contact resistance was studied. Temperature measurements were performed using thermocouples welded to the substrate. The model predictions show good correlation in terms of timing of the irradiation, shadow and consolidation regions. The roller temperature was found to have the most significant impact on the bond line temperature distribution.
The drawing behaviour of metal-composite sandwich structures is investigated as a function of the constituent material properties and the process variables of blank preheat temperature and blank-holder force. Materials include three grades of aluminium alloy as the skin layer material and two types of reinforced polypropylene composite as the core layer material. Blank-holder force has a significant effect on the failure mode of the metal-composite system with lower forces resulting in wrinkling as the dominate mode and higher forces resulting in splitting and fracture. Increasing preheat temperature decreases the failure in the composite core however it will increase the severity of wrinkling in the outer flange and sidewall.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
