In northwest Missouri, Lithic stage flake tools struck from prepared cores have been excavated underlying a Paleo-Indian fluted point assemblage. These assemblages were in two different loesses of the last glaciation. Thermoluminescent analysis of stone tools dates the Paleo-Indian occupations at 8690 +/- 1000 B.C. and 12,855 +/- 1500 B.C.; the Lithic stage occupations must be older than 13,000 B.C. on the basis of geologic correlation, lithic analysis, and cultural stratigraphy.
This search sheet updates the 1991 Cleveland Public Library search sheet published in the first edition of Search Sheets for OPACs on the Internet. It updates only the standard DRA commands. The keyword searching puts one in a different set of commands and requires a separate search sheet. There are several new commands, rel, t#, so, k, and a slight change in the I.P. address, 192.58.246.2. There are now menu prompts for limit if a search ends in a backward slash, for example: a=shakespeare\
The following VTLS Virginia Polytechnic search sheet updates the 1991 search sheet published in the first edition of Search Sheets for OPACS on the Internet. Principal changes are new telnet and IP address, keyword and Boolean search capabilities. VTLS now offers a novice menu-driven mode which is evoked by >. The menu-driven mode does not prompt the user on keyword and Boolean searching. Patrons can switch between menu and command searches by entering a search command or typing /help to see the command help screen (Figure 1).Access to additional commands and information about the library is shown when is typed (Figure 2).The VTLS OPAC can also be reached using Virginia Polytechnic Library's web page, reachable at URL http://vatech.lib.vt.edu/. The VTLS OPAC is the first choice on its web page (Figure 3).Choosing "1. VTLS" gives you access to the catalog producer, VTLS Inc. home page which, in turn, opens up information about using electronic forms for searching the catalog, and the Z39.50 interface. If you want to connect directly with the VTLS Inc. home page, the URL is http://vtls.com/ (Figure 4).Searching Virginia Tech's OPAC using the command mode seems to give the most information about retrieval. For example, in a keyword search using a word stem, VTLS OPAC may return a detailed analysis (Figure 5).VTLS offers available commands at each menu screen. Patrons can usually rely on seeing available commands at the bottom of the screen. The command to view a MARC record, ma, is an exception, but appears to be one of the few commands that is not explained (Figure 6).
To access VTLSThere are two steps to accessing VTLS:(1) Type telnet vtls.vt.edu or Telnet 128.173.16.7. (2) Hit {Return} once or twice.
To exitHit the Telnet escape key to exit.
