Background: The diagnosis of false labor is common. Sending a woman home in early or false labor may result in adverse maternal and neonatal birth outcomes. The study evaluated the birth outcomes of full-term pregnant women following diagnosis of false labor. Methods: A quantitative, retrospective, and descriptive design was conducted in a midwife obstetric unit of a district hospital in South Africa. A hospital customized piloted audit tool was purposively completed from the register in the labor unit of the first 100 records of pregnant women who consulted and were discharged home after false labor from January to May 2019. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the completed audit tools using frequency tables and charts. Results: None of the women discharged home after being diagnosed with false labor gave birth at home or during transit to the labor unit. Most pregnant women (79%) returned to the hospital between 1 day and 4 weeks for possible birth. Most women (81%) gave birth vaginally. None of the women or babies died, had an obstructed labor or a retained placenta. Only four babies were admitted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Conclusion: Discharging full-term pregnant women following diagnosis of false labor did not lead to poor birth outcomes. To protect normal birth, all women should be given adequate health education regarding active labor and correct admission protocols should be followed.
