A B S T R A C T Objective:The main purpose of the paper is to show that blockchain technology may disrupt the existing business models and to explore how this may occur. Research Design & Methods: This is a theory development paper which relies on a literature review and desk re-search. The discussion of the reviewed sources leads to the formulation of three re-search propositions. Findings: The paper provides a short overview of key literature on business models and business model innovation, indicating, among others, that new technologies may be one of the drivers of business model innovation. This study also provides an overview of blockchain technology and a range of its business applications showing how it can disrupt business models. It is shown that blockchain technology may affect many dimensions of business models. We propose that there are three crucial ways in which blockchain technology can affect and disrupt business models: by authenticating traded goods, via disintermediation and via lowering transaction costs. Implications & Recommendations:This study shows that blockchain technology may affect diverse dimensions of business models in diverse industries. It is recommended that mangers should follow developments in this field in order to prepare for possible disruptions in their industries. Contribution & Value Added:This study provides an analysis of the possible impact of blockchain technology on business model innovation. Blockchain technology is gaining momentum with more and more diverse applications, as well as increasing numbers of actors involved in its applications. This paper contributes to our understanding of the possible applications of blockchain technology to businesses, and in particular to its impact on business models. Article type: research paper
In this article we rely on the concept of "international new ventures" (INV), and concentrate on the analysis of two research propositions in the case of selected Hungarian INVs, based on company interviews in two selected industries, biotechnology and information technology. First, we analyse the criteria of the selection of foreign markets in the internationalisation of these fi rms and second, the role of networks in the internationalisation process of selected Hungarian INVs. Our results highlight the typical internationalisation pattern of targeting the largest developed foreign markets globally. In terms of the role of networks in internationalisation, we found evidence of the decisive role of networks in all cases examined. The personal network of the founder(s) was emphasised, especially in winning early clients. The scalability of the personal network-based business model was, however, questioned. The management implications of our fi ndings suggest Hungarian INVs need to intensify their involvement in international communities supporting the growth of such companies. Areas for potential future research include comparing our fi ndings with empirical results from other countries in Central-Eastern Europe.
A tanulmány célja bemutatni a sportgazdaságtani terület elmúlt évtizedekben történő alakulását. A szakirodalmi összefoglalóban a szerzők ismertetik a nemzetközi szinten is fiatal tudományterület önállóvá válásának és fejlődésének nemzetközi és hazai vonatkozású mérföldköveit, valamint tisztázzák a fogalmi kérdéseket, különbözőségeket is. Szekunder kutatásuk során a 2003 és 2018 közötti hazai szakirodalmat tekintik át, tudományos cikkeken végeznek tartalomelemzést. Meghatározott szempontok szerint a magyarországi kiadású sporttudományi folyóiratok menedzsmentmegközelítésű, illetve a gazdálkodástudományi fókusszal rendelkező folyóiratok sportgazdasághoz kapcsolódó cikkeit dolgozzák fel. Megvizsgálják, hogy mely területek kaptak kevesebb figyelmet a hazai szakirodalomban a nemzetközihez képest. Külön figyelmet fordítanak a Chikán-i vállalat-gazdaságtani fogalomkörök használatára, azonosítására. Eredményeik hiánypótló módon megmutatják, mely folyóiratok, szerzők és sportgazdaságtani kutatási területek váltak meghatározóvá. The authors' literature review explains the milestones in the history of this relatively new research field, both in international and domestic aspects, and they clarify the key concepts and terms. In their secondary research they processed the academic journal articles of sport business published in Hungarian language journals between 2003 and 2018. Apart from journals of sport science, management and business journals published in Hungary were also selected to the sample. Differences between the importance of different topics domestically and in international field were identified. Special attention was made to the application of business concepts by Prof. Attila Chikán. Their results are filling a gap in literature, and reveal which journals, authors and sport business research fields gained importance in this period. Finanszírozás/Funding:A szerzők a tanulmány elkészítésével összefüggésben nem részesültek pályázati vagy intézményi támogatásban. The authors did not receive any grant or institutional support in relation with the preparation of the study.
International new ventures proved to contribute positively to national economies they derive from. This article analyses the entrepreneurial level factors of success at the startup stage of international new ventures (INVs) in the context of three Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries in transition: Hungary, Lithuania and Poland. Based on multiple case study approach, the study provides important insights into the international entrepreneurship theory by examining the still underexplored transition in CEE countries' context. An in-depth qualitative analysis has been performed based on 9 case studies, 3 INVs from each country. Lots of similarities emerge between INVs in three CEE countries, however their cultural and historical backgrounds are different enough to justify scholarly interest in potential idiosyncratic features. Findings suggest that there is significant diversity in the entrepreneurial level factors behind the early success of local INVs in international markets across these countries, especially in terms of direct foreign market experience, entrepreneurial orientation and existing network membership. Nevertheless, the findings reveal that in the sample focused on ITC businesses, solid industry experience of the founders proved to be key in the success of INVs' internationalisation.
