Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonosis with worldwide distribution. This disease is facilitated among stray dogs due to their lifestyle and the absence of immunoprophylaxis. The aim of the present study was to provide serological data on the presence of certain serovars of Leptospira spp., which are assumed to circulate in the population of stray dogs in Serbia. During a period of 3 years (from April 2010 to June 2013), 1045 canine sera originating from 11 shelters were submitted to the laboratory of the Department of Infectious Animal Diseases and Diseases of Bees, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Belgrade. A microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was performed to detect antibodies to Leptospira (cutoff, 1:100). The overall seroprevalence was 5.45% (57/1045) and the most prevalent Leptospira serovars were Icterohaemorrhagiae 33.3% (19/57), Pomona 29.8% (17/57), Canicola 14.0% (8/57), Grippotyphosa 3.5% (2/57), Bataviae 1.7 % (1/57), and Sejroe 1.7% (1/57). All dogs were seronegative for antibodies against serovars Australis and Bratislava. The results showed that stray dogs contribute to the spread and maintenance of Leptospira spp. in Serbia. Due to close contact with humans it is very important to improve the prevention of leptospirosis in dogs and support a One Health approach.
Canine Monocytic Ehrlichiosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease with worldwide distribution. With regards to the population of stray dogs, the disease is facilitated due to their lifestyle and the lack of anti-parasitic protection. The aim of this study was to provide serological data on the presence of a specific Ehrlichia canis IgG antibodies in stray dogs, originating from 7 municipalities in Serbia. During the period from April 2013 to June 2014, 217 canine sera were submitted to the laboratory of the Department of Infectious Diseases of Animals and Bees, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Belgrade. An immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) was performed to detect antibodies to Ehrlichia canis (cut off, 1:50). Seropositive dogs were found in 5 out of 7 counties with a seroprevalence varying from 3.57% to 20% and an overall seroprevalence of 11.06% (24/217). There was no statistically significant difference between the prevalence of infection and the host age or gender. Results showed that stray dogs contribute to maintaining and spreading of Ehrlichia canis in Serbia. Due to the close relationship between people and dogs, it is of great importance to constantly monitor and improve prevention of this disease.
Blood serum samples of asymptomatic carriers-calves were collected from three farms in the territory of the Republic of Serbia during 2011 and 2012. Commercial Mycoplasma bovis ELISA kit (Bio-X Diagnostics, Belgique) for serological diagnosis from cattle blood sera and milk was used in this research. Calves’ blood sera were tested using immunoenzymatic indirect ELISA assay as described by manufacturer’s instructions. From 5603 blood sera of asymptomatic carriers-calves 144 (2,57%) samples were tested positive for the presence of specific Mycoplasma bovis antibodies. In three different farms proportions of seropositive samples varied from 0,32% to 10,6% in regard to total number of tested samples from the individual farms. In this paper we present the results of Mycoplasma bovis prevalence in asymptomatic carriers-calves.
In recent years, micromobility, as an affordable, environmentally friendly and efficient form of transport, is often mentioned as an adequate alternative to the passenger car on congested city streets for the realization of the transport requirements of its inhabitants. In this paper, attention is focused on electric or e-scooters, one of the new means of micromobile transportation. Taking into account the frequency of use of electric scooters in the area of the city of Obrenovac, the goal of this paper includes the analysis of the safety of users of electric scooters, as well as determining the mutual influence of e-scooter users and pedestrians, i.e. drivers of passenger cars on safety. The obtained results indicate that the residents of Obrenovac recognize all the benefits that this mode of transportation brings them, but they also see the problems and shortcomings of the current situation in the field of using this means of transportation and realize that changes are necessary. The data obtained from a survey of the attitudes and behavior of e-scooter users can be useful to decision-makers as basic guidelines for the adequate implementation of e-scooters in transport systems.
This paper presents the findings of research carried out with the aim of gaining an understanding of the characteristics of male and female child characters in children's literature. "Characteristics" in our research refers to the representation, role and description of male and female characters. The sample consisted of 32 literary texts with child characters in readers used in the first and second grades of primary school. Using the descriptive method and the technique of content analysis, it was established that male characters are almost twice as represented as female characters and that they are more frequently the main characters in a text. With regard to character description, inquisitiveness, imaginativeness and resourcefulness are the most common traits of male characters, while kindness and sensibility are characteristics ascribed only to female characters. It is surprising that the female characters did not have negative traits, leading to the conclusion that their characteristics are more positively rated than the characteristics and actions of male characters. Based on our data, we can conclude that gender stereotypes are present in the descriptions of male and female characters, and we therefore invite readers to take part in further discussions and a more comprehensive analysis of the representation of child characters both in literary works and in other cultural products.
