Advances in cloud-enabled service-oriented architectures (SOA) have caused a resurgence of industry interest in business process catalog as a vehicle for establishing shared references for collaborative business processes. With this paper, we start to explore the state of art and practice in business process catalog and classification scheme (BPCCS) development and use for the manufacturing industry. More specifically, this paper includes two major contributions. First, we identify a set of initial requirements for BPCCS. Second, we provide a use-case analysis based on the identified requirements. We end by comparing our BPCCS requirements with those being developed across other, BPCCS R&D groups.
To facilitate the vision of service-oriented manufacturing, Cloud Manufacturing (CMfg) will need to support business process model life-cycle management. In this paper, we propose the Business Process Cataloging and Classification System (BPCCS) to support that role. BPCCS can facilitate adaptation of business process models. We validate life-cycle management requirements for such a system and propose capabilities the system must have to address these requirements. We analyze related work in academia and industry as a basis for synthesizing a meta-model and a conceptual architecture for the system. We conclude that contextual information for business process models is a critical part of such a system and where the CMfg community can contribute new and valuable results.
Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is being becoming the most used standard for business process modelling. One of the important upgrades of BPMN 2.0 with respect to BPMN 1.2 is the fact that Data Objects are now handling semantic elements. Nevertheless, BPMN doesn't enable the representation of interoperability problems in the exchanged data object, which remains a limitation when using BPMN to express interoperability issues in enterprise processes. We propose to extend the Meta-Object Facility meta-model and the XML Schema Definition of BPMN as well as the notation in order to fill this gap. The extension, named Data Interoperability, is defined using the BPMN Extension Mechanism. This new elements will allow to represent existing interoperability problems as well as interoperability concerns which have been solved. We illustrate the Data Interoperability capabilities with an example from a real industrial case.
