Intralesional injection of mumps and Candida skin test antigens has been shown to be effective in the treatment of warts. Warts are generally difficult to treat in children. To determine the efficacy of intralesional skin test antigen injection for the treatment of resistant warts in children, we treated 47 pediatric patients with one or more warts with intralesional injection of mumps or Candida skin test antigen into one wart. Twenty-two patients (47%) with resistant warts experienced complete resolution of treated warts. An average of 3.78 treatments were necessary. An additional 34% of children had a greater than 25% improvement in their warts. Sixty-eight percent of subjects with more than one wart also noted at least partial resolution (greater than 25% resolution) of untreated warts at distant sites, with 34% experiencing complete resolution. We concluded that intralesional injection of skin test antigens is an effective therapy for children who have recalcitrant, nongenital, cutaneous warts.
The CD contains a thorough introduction to soft tissue tumors, beginning with definitions of carcinoma and sarcoma. In addition he gives a review of the cells of origin, presentation, cytology and metastatic behavior of these tumor types. Next, there is a complete review of the classification scheme and steps to follow in order to correctly diagnose soft tissue tumors. This includes discussion of clinical appearance, age of presentation, gross and microscopic appearance of various soft tissue tumors. This discussion is beautifully illustrated by pictures of the clinical, gross, and microscopic appearance of the tumors being discussed. The CD then reviews 21 cases presented at the 100th CaliforniaTumor Tissue Registry Semi-Annual Cancer Seminar. Each case is presented starting with history and a picture of the clinical and/or gross appearance of the tumor. Multiple microscopic images are then presented at various magnifications. Special stains are discussed and the viewer is told the tumor's staining qualities. Unfortunately, pertinent positive stains are not shown. The diagnosis is given and the tumor is then discussed in detail. Dr Chase is careful to point out key diagnostic features both clinically and histologically. This format covers various tumors from each of the following general categories: fibroblastic tumors, vascular tumors, neural tumors, muscle tumors (smooth and striated), fatty tumors, and miscellaneous.Technically the CD is easy to install and view. The pictures are well focused and appropriate magnifications are presented. The format is easy to use and the viewer can easily point and click to and from various topics. Overall I found the disc very informative and easy to use. I would recommend it to dermatologists and pathologists looking for a thorough well organized review of soft tissue tumors.
