Lipophilic calix[4]arenes bearing ester and amide linkages were synthesized and tested for their usefulness as neutral carriers of Na+-selective electrodes. The resulted poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrodes based on the calixarene derivatives were found to be highly selective for Na+.

The lipophilic bis(monoaza crown ethers) (III) and (VI) are prepared from the ditosylates (I) and the aza crown ethers (II) or the malonic dichloride (IV) and the hydroxyethyl crown ether (V).
