As an archipelago country, Indonesia is lied on the Pacific ring of fire - the center of active volcano and earthquake, located in tsunami-prone regions and several tectonic plates and had intense tropical rain, that places Indonesia at regular risk of earthquake, volcano eruption, tsunami, flood, and other natural disasters. Instead of nature and severity destructions, these natural disasters create a large volume of debris and waste, about 5 to 10 times of the solid waste generated usually, that have negative impacts on environmental, social and public health if not managed carefully. This study proposes a smart, sustainable approach for waste management in post-natural disaster. Some natural disaster happened in Indonesia was collected from Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency to identify the global waste and debris potential from the disaster. Smart, sustainable municipal waste management framework based on four priority areas of governance, economy, social and environment, from the previous study, is adopted to develop a post-disaster smart, sustainable waste management framework and a pre-design system. The proposed framework is focused on the technical mechanism for collecting and converting generated waste and debris into valuable materials that are integrated into the waste management system.
Liquified petroleum gas (LPG) storage tanks are essential components for storing and distributing fuels. However, system failures due to inspection flaws increase the risk of leaks, fires, and explosions. Therefore, this study discussed the development of a safety system application applied to LPG storage tanks based on a risk-based leak (RBL) analysis. Data associated with risk factor values were obtained from an LPG storage tank in a gas distributor company. The risk of failure was calculated by analyzing the probability of failure (PoF) and the consequence of failure (CoF). The results showed that the level of risk observed was medium-high with a PoF in category 1 at a total damage factor value of 1. Furthermore, the CoF in category E was positioned with a consequence analysis value of 2381.29 m2 with an LPG storage tank life span of 33.5 years and an external inspection interval of five years.
Patents have an important role in increasing the competitiveness of a nation. Patents encourage researchers and inventors to develop new ideas, which allows them to obtain exclusive rights to their inventions. However, many researchers have produced outputs in the form of prototypes, processes, and key methods for making tools or products, but some of them have not registered legal protection for their findings in the form of patents because they are not competent to draft patent documents. Therefore, this technical note presents practical steps in preparing patent documents, especially for novice researchers. This technical note is limited to patents in the mechanical field. The examples provided are also only an alternative and not the only way to prepare patent documents. We hope that this technical note will benefit novice researchers and encourage them to register patents for their research findings.
The research grant is carried out with a quality assurance cycle that involves the research group to produce the research outcomes such as publication, books, or other intellectual property. However, there are problems regarding the distribution of honorariums from the rest of the budget so that they are fair according to the contributions of each researcher. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to establish the algorithm to produce the fairness index of honorarium distribution based on the researchers’ contribution. The index was built on the input, which is a manifestation of research quality assurance cycle and implemented in pseudocode and flowchart. The results show that the simulation of three conditions with different contributions from each researcher was carried out with accurate results and reflected the performance-based research honorarium distribution. Thus, the algorithm can be used by researchers for the fairness of honorarium distribution.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
