An efficient methodology is developed involving a metal-free oxidation of cis or trans-trisubstituted oxazolidin-2-ones in the presence of NBS under light irradiation for the synthesis of N-alkyl oxazol-2-one-5-carboxylates. The mild conditions employed enable the efficient and rapid synthesis of a variety of those compounds in satisfactory yields.

1) Procedure for the synthesis of trans-2-hydroxymethyl-3-arylaziridines 2a-f and 2a'Lithium aluminium hydride (1.2 mmol) was slowly added to a stirred solution of aziridine-2carboxylates 1(1 mmol) in anhydrous THF (10 mL) under nitrogen at -20°C and the mixture was kept to stir for 30 min at room temperature. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was quenched with aqueous solution of ammonium chloride and extracted with CH 2 Cl 2 . The
