Purpose
This paper aims to analyze and investigate the performance of an improved fault detection and identification (FDI) method based on multiple criteria, applied to six-switch three-phase inverter (SSTPI)-fed induction motor (IM) drives under both single and multiple open insulated-gate bipolar transistors(IGBT) faults.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper proposes an advanced diagnostic method for both single and multiple open IGBT faults dedicated to SSTPI-fed IM drives considering five distinct faulty operating conditions as follows: a single IGBT open-circuit fault, a single-phase open-circuit fault, a non-crossed double fault in two different legs, a crossed double fault in two different legs and a three-IGBT open-circuit fault. This is achieved because of the introduction of a new diagnosis variable provided using the information of the slope of the current vector in (α-β) frame. The proposed FDI method is based on the synthesis and the analysis, under both healthy and faulty operations, of the behaviors of the introduced diagnosis variable, the three motor phase currents and their normalized average values. Doing so, the developed FDI method allows a best compromise of fast detection and precision localization of IGBT open-circuit fault of the inverter.
Findings
Simulation works, carried out considering the implementation of the direct rotor flux oriented control in an IM fed by the conventional SSTPI, have proved the high performance of the advanced FDI method in terms of fast fault detection associated with a high robustness against false alarms, against speed and load torque fast variations and against the oscillations of the DC-bus voltage in the case of both healthy and faulty operations.
Research limitations/implications
This work should be extended considering the validation of the obtained simulation results through experiments.
Originality/value
Different from other FDI methods, which suffer from a low diagnostic effectiveness for low load levels and false alarms during transient operation, this method offers the potentialities to overcome these drawbacks because of the introduction of the new diagnosis variable. This latter, combined with the information provided from the three motor phase currents and their normalized average values allow a more efficient detection and identification of IGBT open-circuit fault.
Nowadays, the growing integration of renewable energy sources poses several challenges to electrical energy systems. The latter need be controlled by grid rules to ensure their stability and maintain the efficiency of renewable energy consumption. In this context, a novel HESS (hybrid energy storage system) control strategy, combining the PV (photovoltaic) generator with FLC (fuzzy logic control), SC (super-capacitor), and lithium-ion battery modules, is advanced. The proposed energy control rests on monitoring of the low-frequency and high-frequency electrical power components of the mismatch between power demand and generation, while applying the error component of the lithium-ion battery current. On accounting for the climatic condition and load variation considerations, the SC undertakes to momentarily absorb the high-frequency power component, while the low-frequency component is diverted to the lithium-ion battery. To improve the storage system’s performance, lifetime, and avoid load total disconnection during sudden variations, we consider equipping the envisioned energy control design with controllers of SM and ANN types. The MATLAB/Simulink based simulation results turn out to testify well the investigated HESS control scheme’s outstanding performance and efficiency in terms of DC bus voltage rapid regulation, thereby enhancing the battery’s lifetime and ensuring the PV system’s continuous flow.
The prevalent tendency in power transmission systems is to operate closer and closer to the energy limit, rendering system voltage instability a commonly widespread phenomenon. It is, therefore, necessary that certain remedial corrective controls need be undertaken whenever these systems tend towards failure. In this respect, load shedding stands as a major correction mechanism and such a failure can be prevented and nominal system voltage can be resumed. It is worth noting however that load shedding must be implemented very carefully to ensure the satisfaction of both the customer and the electricity-production company. In this context, our focus of interest is laid on load and machine shedding against voltage collapse as an effective corrective method. It is important to note that such a problem turns out to be commonly defined as an optimization problem under constraints. Using genetic algorithms as resolution methods, the application of the proposed methods was implemented on the 14-node IEEE test network, while considering a number of different case studies.
