The widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI) in civil engineering has provided civil engineers with various benefits and opportunities, including a rich data collection, sustainable assessment, and productivity. The trend of construction is diverted toward sustainability with the aid of digital technologies. In this regard, this paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) in order to explore the influence of AI in civil engineering toward sustainable development. In addition, SLR was carried out by using academic publications from Scopus (i.e., 3478 publications). Furthermore, screening is carried out, and eventually, 105 research publications in the field of AI were selected. Keywords were searched through Boolean operation “Artificial Intelligence” OR “Machine intelligence” OR “Machine Learning” OR “Computational intelligence” OR “Computer vision” OR “Expert systems” OR “Neural networks” AND “Civil Engineering” OR “Construction Engineering” OR “Sustainable Development” OR “Sustainability”. According to the findings, it was revealed that the trend of publications received its high intention of researchers in 2020, the most important contribution of publications on AI toward sustainability by the Automation in Construction, the United States has the major influence among all the other countries, the main features of civil engineering toward sustainability are interconnectivity, functionality, unpredictability, and individuality. This research adds to the body of knowledge in civil engineering by visualizing and comprehending trends and patterns, as well as defining major research goals, journals, and countries. In addition, a theoretical framework has been proposed in light of the results for prospective researchers and scholars.
Communication is the heart of implemented projects of the construction industry, where project managers consume 90% of their time communicating with project participants. However, some barriers occur during this significant process of transferring project information. Therefore, this review paper highlights these constraints and guide project managers to take proper action to avoid them. Furthermore, as project communication needs to be carefully managed, this paper introduces communication management due to its high value, all long with the communication management plan as one of the main elements of the overall project management plan that aims to meet the stakeholders' requirements by delivering successful projects eventually.
The study focused on assessing the attributes of identity in the historic waterfront to regenerate the historic waterfront with eroding identity. Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, is succumbed by unprecedented urbanization in the past few decades. Thus, Sungai Klang and Sungai Gombak are overshadowed by new developments which are insensitive to the existing character and setting of the historic waterfronts. Consequently, this threatens the historic waterfront identity, even though the rivers were the starting point of Kuala Lumpur. This study aimed at assessing the factors to regenerate the identity in the historic waterfront and propose strategies that can contribute to the regeneration of identity of the area. The research methodology adopted is qualitative approach. Attributes that contribute to the identity of the historic waterfront were identified through literature review and evaluated by townscape appraisal and field observation. The area selected as the case study is the Central Market area at the historic Klang waterfront. Central Market is a Category Two Heritage building separated from water edge by the new LRT infrastructure. Historically the former wet market, Jalan Benteng and the water body created a combined genius loci for the place, as boats carried goods to and from the Central Market, forming a significant node. Key findings indicated that several attributes of identity are eroding, causing poor accessibility and legibility, poor water quality and no block permeability to extend activities. Also, the new landscape elements by ROL Project at Jalan Benteng affect the enclosure of the historic waterfront promenade. The natural and man-made landscape elements surrounding the waterfront are not coherent, does not aid in legibility to the waterfront but rather affect the meaning and association with the historic setting. The open spaces in the waterfront precinct are misused, such as the car park of Central Market, which has immense potential to be a major node. These scenarios are deteriorating the identity of the historic waterfront. Finally, the study proposed several urban design recommendations aimed at regenerating the identity in the historic waterfront.
Building information modeling (BIM) offers various deterministic and uncertain benefits and costs. Although there are similarities between such costs and benefits in developed and developing countries, these factors should be analyzed carefully for each region/country due to differences in economic and technical status as well as available policies and regulations. Numerous studies have demonstrated the benefits and shortcomings of BIM adoption around the globe; however, there is scarce comprehensive research focusing on Iran with unique financial circumstances. The aim of this research is to investigate the benefits, opportunities, costs and risks (BOCRs) offered by BIM implementation in Iran as a developing country with high potential in but less adoption of BIM in construction projects. After identifying the BOCRs of BIM adoption from the literature, the Interval-Valued Fuzzy Delphi Method was used to identify the BOCRs while a novel multi-criteria decision-making approach (i.e., fuzzy parsimonious analytic hierarchy process) was employed to analyze BOCRs, respectively. The results showed that 4 out of 46 BOCRs gathered from the literature were not significant for Iran and should be omitted from further analysis, while one cost factor was added to the list. Also, it was revealed that “Facilitates project communication among stakeholders”, “Integrating life-cycle assessment dimensions to the decision-making process”, “Cost/efforts required to personnel training” and “Lack of national standard, procedures and guidelines” were the most significant BOCRs, respectively. These findings contributed to filling the research gap in BIM adoption in Iran using a novel methodology that provides deep insights into BIM adoption for practitioners and can be used as a basis for developing theoretical and conceptual research frameworks. The findings of this study are built upon the opinions of experts within the context of Iran and should be considered as a snapshot of the BOCRs of the adoption of BIM in Iranian construction projects while these are not futureproofed.
