Background: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are among the common causes of facial pain. Internal derangement is the most common intra-articular TMJ disorder. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ozone application in arthrocentesis of temporomandibular joints with internal derangement.
Patients and methods:Thirty patients were recruited in this study. They presented with limited function and pain related to the TMJ. They were randomly and equally divided in two groups; group 1 (study group), subjected to arthrocentesis using ozonized water and group 2 (control group), subjected to arthrocentesis with saline only. Visual analogue scale (VAS) pain scores and mouth opening were assessed preoperatively and at different intervals postoperatively. Results: Pain levels decreased in both groups however, a significant decrease in the study group was noted after one month and one year postoperatively. Maximal mouth opening improved for all patients in both groups and the significant increase was reported in the study group after one month, six months, and one year postoperatively.
Conclusion:Ozone showed clinical efficacy during arthrocentesis of temporomandibular joint internal derangements.
