The Bahrain field, first discovery in the southern part of the Arabian Gulf region, has been on continuous production since 1933. Production peaked at 78,000 bopd in 1970. Although many reservoirs have reached mature stages, considerable volumes of oil resources remain unexploited due to the difficult nature of the rock and fluids, complicated by heterogeneities, complex fluid distribution, unfavorable rock-fluid characteristics and compartmentalization, to name a few. The keys to unlock the potential of the Bahrain field lie in 1) understanding surface and subsurface production problems of each of the reservoirs1, 2) attracting the right expertise in the field of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), and 3) attracting large investments to debottleneck and expand facilities, test EOR pilots, and implement new technologies2.
