Background: Yoga is an ancient Indian Philosophy. Recent interest in Yoga is due to its beneficial effects on the various systems of the body. Yogic exercises when practiced regularly have shown to improve health and well being. Pranayama involves mainly breathing control exercises therefore we decided to find beneficial effects of Pranayama on pulmonary function tests. Methods: The present study was conducted in Department of Physiology Osmania Medical College Hyderabad. Healthy male individuals n=50 were selected and divided into two groups randomly (Group I-after 9 weeks of regular yogic training, Group II (Control)-normal individuals. Pulmonary function tests such as Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR), Forced Expiratory Flow (FEF 25-75% ) and Maximum Voulntary Ventilation (MVV) were recorded with Medspiror. Results: FVC, PEFR and MVV were 74.04%, 78.8%, 78.6% respectively in control group while the values in study group were 81.21%, 97.1%, 97.42% respectively. 'P' values were significant for PEFR and MVV. Conclusion: Pranayama training helps in improvement of Respiratory function after regular training. This may be due to beneficial effect of Pranayama on respiratory system. Yoga has beneficial effects on respiratory and cardiovascular systems when practiced regularly.
Foreign Body Aspiration is a potential complication in dental practice. The aspiration of a tooth or its fragments represents a serious medical situation because it can rapidly block the airways partially or completely. The edges of the tooth may traumatize the lining of respiratory mucosa. Many dental materials and instruments are of small size, and when exposed to saliva with limited opening of oral cavity it becomes all the more difficult to manipulate them correctly. When the patient is placed in the supine or semi-raised position, such objects might be swallowed or aspirated into the oropharynx. Foreign Body Aspiration episodes have the potential to result in acute medical and life-threatening emergencies. Prevention is clearly the best approach however when such cases and situation are presented rapid intervention is essential for ensuring patient safety. This review article highlights the protocol of management of Foreign Body Aspirations in Dental Clinics.
BACKGROUND:Surgery is an essential part of present medical practice and it is one of the important tools of curing many diseases. Surgery is done in elective cases after the diagnosis is promptly made before operating, and in emergency surgeries an empirical diagnosis is made and after opening moderation is adopted in the procedure. In spite of all safety precautions adopted, death may result in some cases. Then a question arises about the competency and efficiency of the surgeon, investigations, interpretation about the diagnosis of the disease and the management of the case. To answer these questions we need to do a Pathological (Clinical) autopsy than a medicolegal autopsy. The scope of the present study was only to find which of the surgeries resulted in most of the fatal outcomes and try to determine the underlying causes it has its own limitations. Deciding about the occurrence of Medical Negligence and fixation of responsibility is beyond the scope of this study. AIMS: To know the incidence of surgical postoperative deaths of Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad [A.P], during year 2006. RESULTS: The incidence of surgical death in this group of population is about 1.5%. Most number of cases involved was males and belongs to 22-45 year age group. 75% of deaths occurred in Males of this group as compared to females who were 25% of the total study population, however it was not statistically significant. 86.6% of the surgeries with fatal outcome were done in emergency conditions and rest was done on elective basis. Study also shows that the main anatomical locations involved are the head and neck region 48.3% which resulted in most number of postsurgical mortality. CONCLUSIONS: The frequency of death occurring after emergency surgeries is more than that of elective surgeries probably indicating that in emergency surgeries there was some hastiness in selecting the cases for surgery, presence of co -morbid conditions and lack of complete investigations due to time constraints could be among the factors or the cases were in critical condition before surgery.
