GREEN, J. M., and M. FARWELL. 1971. Winter habits of the cunner, Tautogolabrus adspersus (Walbaum 1792), in Newfoundland. Can. J. Zool. 49: 1497-1499. Cunners along the southern and eastern coasts of Newfoundland are found by SCUBA diving operations to be torpid under rocks in shallow water when winter temperatures fall below 5"C, and this observation is supported by laboratory observations.
A qualitative and quantitative description of the agonistic behavior of juvenile Stichaeus punctatus was undertaken with seven recognizable actions being observed. Dominant and subordinate fish differed in the frequency and duration of these actions and in coloration. The sequence of actions in agonistic bouts followed definite patterns and became less complex with increasing length of an encounter.
