Empirical Sherwood number and friction factor correlations are presented for electrodialysis systems with channels containing strip-type eddy promoters having various spacings. Based on the scheme developed by Sonin and lsaacson (1974), it is shown that an eddy promoter spacing of about four channel thicknesses represents an optimization from the point of view of process economics. Sample calculations for optimum operating conditions are given for typical brackish water electrodialysis processes using the optimum channel configuration. It is argued, furthermore, that with the optimum spacing, the strip-type promoters investigated here have a performance approximately equivalent to, or better than, the best of other types of eddy promotion systems which have been tested, at least in the Reynolds number range of interest in electrodialysis systems.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
