Background:Health promotion is an essential strategy for reduction of health disparities. Health promotion includes all activities that encourage optimum physical, spiritual, and mental functions. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of a Health Promotion Program (HPP) on behavior in terms of the dimensions of the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) in patients after Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG).Methods and Materials:In this clinical trial study, 80 patients who had undergone CABG surgery (2011-2012) were selected and randomly divided in two groups: Experimental and Control that investigated by (HPLP II). Then the experimental group was educated about diet, walking and stress management. The program process was followed up for three months and after tward whole variables were investigated again. The overall score and the scores for the six dimensions of the HPLP (self actualization, health responsibility, exercise, nutrition, interpersonal support and stress management) were measured in the pre- and post-test periods. Data were manually entered into SPSS version 21(IBM Corp, USA) by one the authors. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-test and paired t-test. Mean standard deviation and standard error of the mean (with 95% Confidence Interval) were generated for each item. Results:Results showed that score of stress management (p=.036), diet (p=.002), Spiritual Growth (p=.001) and interrelationship (p=002) increase in experimental group after intervention. Average scores after three months in the control group had no significant changes; except responsibility for health (p<.05). Results of the study revealed that comparison the scores of the experimental group were significantly different from the control group in all lifestyle aspects except for spiritual growth. Conclusion:This study showed that HPP on lifestyle and health promotion in patients who suffered from Coronary Heart Disease (CAD) could improve the patient’s awareness of healthy behaviors and well-being in the quality of life.
Background:Fatigue is a debilitating complication in hemodialysis patients. Foot reflexology is one of the complementary medicine techniques with low complications that can control fatigue. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of foot reflexology massage on fatigue severity in hemodialysis patients. Methods: In this clinical trial, 90 patients undergoing hemodialysis at Ali ibn Abi Talib hospital in Zahedan, Iran, in 2017 were randomly selected and then divided into two groups of intervention and control (n = 45 per group). The data collection tools included a demographic checklist and the fatigue severity scale developed by Krupp et al. Foot reflexology massage was performed in the intervention group for half an hour (15 minutes for each foot) by a trained researcher for three consecutive dialysis sessions. After completion of dialysis sessions, a questionnaire was completed as post-test in both groups. For data analysis, independent t-test, paired t-test, and chi-square test were run in SPSS, version 21. Results: There was no significant difference in the mean fatigue scores between the control and intervention groups before foot reflexology massage in the three sessions of dialysis. After the intervention, the independent t-test showed a significant difference in the mean fatigue score between the control and intervention groups (P < 0.001). Conclusions:The findings of this study showed that foot reflexology massage is an uncomplicated technique for reducing fatigue severity in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Introduction and Aim:Aging is considered as the phenomenon of the day in the health arena of the world and Iran. It is anticipated that there will be an explosion of aging population in Iran in about 2031 and 20-25% of the population will be aged over 60 years. With aging, chronic diseases also increase and diminish the functional ability of older people. On the other hand, increased healthcare costs should be also added to this issue. Health promotion is a concept of process that continues throughout life. As much as health promotion is important in children and adults, it is equally important in older people. In fact, the elderlies, as a group, also acquire many benefits from health promotion behaviors. Due to the increasing elderly population, geriatric health promotion and enhancing the health level of older people is proposed as a health priority that should be properly planned. Hence, the present study has been conducted in this regard and aims to identify behaviors of health promotion and chronic diseases of aging in the elderly people of Iranshahr-Iran.Materials and Methods:The present research is a cross-sectional descriptive study whose population consists of 425 elderly people aged 60 years and over, who lived in the city of Iranshahr*, IR Iran. The random cluster sampling method has been used to select the research samples. The required information was collected using a questionnaire which was distributed among the older people through visiting their homes; then, the collected data was statistically analyzed using the statistical software of SPSS version 13.Findings:The research findings show that the mean age of older people is 66.33 ± 7.7 and the highest frequency belongs to the age group of 60 years and the maximum age is 92 years. 69.5% of the older people were in the age group of the young elderly (60-69 years) and 44% of them lived with their married children; also 55.8%, 81.9%, 70.5%, and 74.4% of them were respectively female, illiterate, married, and unemployed. The mean score of geriatric health promotion behaviors was 6.1 ± 1.87 in the range of 0-11 and 54.9% of them got the score of the inappropriate health promotion behavior. The most frequent chronic diseases of older people were respectively joint problems (78.9%), sensory problems (64.1%), and hypertension (56.6%). No significant relationship was observed between the score of health promotion behaviors and “the gender, lifestyle and marital status of the older people”, but there was statistically a significant relationship between the score of health promotion behaviors and “the age, education, and job of the older people”.Conclusion:Providing training programs for health promotion behaviors in elderly people can improve these behaviors and enhance their health and quality of life and reduce the incidence of chronic diseases in them. The goal of health promotion behaviors is to maintain performance, independence and quality of life; and many studies have demonstrated that the elderly people who aged 60 years and over benefit from healt...
Background: There are several factors such as noise and light, which affect the sleep quality of patients admitted to the cardiac care unit (CCU) and cause sleep disorders in these individuals. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the impact of applying eye masks and earplugs as well as implementing the quiet time (QT) protocol on the sleep quality of patients hospitalized in the CCU of Ali Ibn Abi Talib Hospital in Zahedan. Methods: This clinical trial was performed on 135 CCU patients. Subjects meeting the inclusion criteria were chosen through convenience sampling. The patients were divided into three groups (control, eye mask and earplugs, and QT protocol) and were matched in terms of background variables. The subjects were studied over three days after admission. On the first night, the patients' sleep quality was determined by the Verran and Snyder-Halpern Sleep Scale (VSH), and on the second and third nights, the interventions (eye mask and earplugs and QT protocol) were administered. The next day, as the post-test, patients' sleep quality was measured again. ANOVA test was used to determine and compare the mean sleep quality of the three groups, and the chi-square test was employed to compare the qualitative variables in the three groups. Results: After the intervention, the mean score of sleep disturbance was significantly different between the control and the two experimental groups. Also, the mean score of sleep efficacy was higher in the eye mask and earplugs group than the other two groups, indicating a better sleep quality in this group. Conclusions: As low-cost devices with no side effects, eye masks and earplugs can improve the quality of sleep in [CCU] patients, and nurses could utilize them to help reduce environmental factors, which disturb patients' sleep.
Introduction: Spiritual care is an important concept in nursing, and there have been different definitions for it; however, in order to address the issue of care, there is a need for a common understanding of this concept. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to analyse the concept of spiritual care in nursing.Material and methods: the concept of spiritual nursing care was analysed using a hybrid model, which consists of three phases of theoretical, field work, and final analysis. In the theoretical phase, related articles were reviewed in valid databases from 2000 to 2019. In the field-work phase, in-depth and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 participants using a purposive sampling method. Finally, the final analysis was performed by combining the two previous phases. Results:The results of the final analysis showed that spiritual care is a kind of planned and responsible care through understanding emotions, and psychological and religious needs, which is formed through a trust and empathy-based relationship to solve the patient's problems and focuses on maintaining patients' dignity and respect and establishes a kind of balance between different physical, mental, and social dimensions of the patient. Conclusions:The results of the current study help to clarify the concept of spiritual care, and in turn provide us with a holistic view of the concept and better understanding of its use in research and practice; however, it is recommended that further studies are carried out in other medical centres in the country to clarify all aspects of this concept.
