Today students’ are sometime less interested in understanding active and passive voice, so that when they learn it, there is a lot of incomprehension in understanding it, especially in transforming active to passive voice. This research are to know and to find out the most dominant the students’ difficulties in transforming active to passive voice form at fourth semester students’ STAIN Gajah Putih Takengon Aceh in 2017/2018 Academic Year. This study was conducted using a qualitative approach. The source of the data for this study was taken at fourth semester students’ of English Department of STAIN GP Takengon Aceh. Besides, the source of data in this research also a grammar lecturer. The technique of data collection were used observation, documentation, and interviews technique. The data analysis were used the Miles and Huberman’s models, including reduction of data, display, and conclusions; drawing/verifying. The outcomes of analysis, the researcher found the most dominant students’ difficulties in changing active to passive voice were: difficulties in determining subject, difficulties in using auxiliary verb be, and difficulties in using verb3 in passive voice and most dominant difficulties was found in form of past continuous they are not able to understand well, due to still use tools (dictionary). Based on the findings of this study, the researcher concluded that some students’ have a fairly good ability in understanding passive voice form, but some of the other students’ must also improve their understanding in English grammar. Keywords: Active and Passive Voice, Analysis, Students’ Difficulties Abstrak: Dewasa ini mahasiswa terkadang kurang tertarik untuk memahami bentuk active dan passive voice, sehingga ketika mereka mempelajarinya, ada banyak kesulitan dalam memahaminya, terutama dalam mengubah bentuk active menjadi passive. Penelitian ini untuk melihat dan mengetahui kesulitan paling dominan dalam mengubah bentuk active menjadi passive mahasiswa semester empat prodi bahasa Inggris STAIN Gajah Putih Takengon Aceh pada Tahun Akademik 2017/2018. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Sumber data penelitian ini diambil dari mahasiswa semester empat prodi bahasa Inggris STAIN Gajah Putih Takengon Aceh dan dosen prodi. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik observasi, dokumentasi, dan wawancara. Analisis data menggunakan model Miles dan Huberman. Hasil analisis, peneliti menemukan kesulitan siswa yang paling dominan dalam mengubah active menjadi passive adalah: kesulitan dalam menentukan subjek, mengunakan auxiliary verb be, dan kesulitan dalam menggunakan kata kerja bentuk ke 3, dan yang paling dominan ditemukan kesulitan dalam merubah past continuous, sehingga membutuhkan alat (kamus). Berdasarkan temuan penelitian ini, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa beberapa mahasiswa memiliki kemampuan yang cukup baik dalam memahami bentuk passive, tetapi beberapa siswa lain harus meningkatkan pemahaman mereka dalam tata bahasa Inggris. This research is about lexical cohesion (repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, collocation). This study's objectives were: (1) to find the type of LC in the reportage, and opinion column of Jakarta Post News and (2) find the dominant type of LC in the reportage and opinion column of Jakarta Post News. Researchers used library research, while the data sources were the news reports and opinion texts of the Jakarta Post News, which consisted of 30 opinion news and 30 reportage news in edition October. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman's model (reduction, display and verification). The results found synonym 94, repetition 87, antonym 67, hyponym 40, collocation 30. The total LC in the Jakarta Post News is 318. The dominant LC in the Jakarta Post is synonymous with a total of 94 words.
<em>This research related to speech functions in cigarette billboard texts. The objectives are to describe the category and to derive dominantly used and explain the factors of the phenomenon of speech functions. The research method used descriptive qualitative. Data was collected by applying documentary techniques from commercial cigarette billboard texts (headline, subhead, slogan and images) in public places around the city center of Medan. The finding describes of the four speech functions available only three are used in commercial cigarette billboard text, statement constitutes 18 (69.25 %), question 1 (3. 8 %), command 7 (26. 9%), and offer 0 from 26 billboard texts. Statement genre used as the dominant one because it is suitable with the pattern of commercial billboard texts, where the viewer assumed only briefly saw the display of images and written text of the billboard with a duration of 5-7 seconds when they were driving. Thus, simple and powerful information in speech function of functional grammar and the language used must be efficient, effective and able to hypnotize readers so that results in positive action on the item being advertised</em>.
This research aims to determine the students' errors in writing report text at eight grade SMP N 3 Timang Gajah students. The research was conduct using a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The primary data source is the eighth-grade students and the teacher English at SMP N 3 Timang Gajah. The data collection instrument uses observation sheets, interview sheets, and the documentary (test) study and the researcher's data analysis using Miles and Huberman models, including data reduction, display, and verification. The percentage of grade VIII students' achievement in writing report text in the reference made is low, namely only reaching: general nouns 22.04%, at present tense 22.57%, on linking verbs 29.17% and action verbs are 26.21%. In conclusion, the students still error in writing report text at grade VIII students of SMP N 3 Timang Gajah. Therefore, they should have great motivation and interest in learning report text and get used to practicing it in everyday life.
Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di Lingkungan XII Kelurahan Tegal Sari Mandala 1. Berdasarkan hasil observasi dan wawancara yang dilakukan kepada masyarakat terkhusus anak-anak di Lingkungan XII Kelurahan Tegal Sari didapatkan informasi bahwa terdapat banyak keluarga dari ekonomi lemah yang mempunyai banyak anak yang memiliki tingkat kecakapan berbahasa Inggris rendah, baik lisan maupun tulisan. Permasalahan ini disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor, seperti 1) rendahnya minat belajar, 2) kurangnya dukungan untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris dari orang tua yang pada umumnya memiliki pendidikan rendah dan 3) kurang tersedianya sarana dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris, seperti media pembelajaran dan buku-buku bacaan berbahasa Inggris. Solusi yang ditawarkan tim pengabdian dalam mengatasi permasalahan tersebut adalah dengan melaksanakan kegiatan pendampingan “Pemanfaatan Buku Bergambar Dwi Bahasa Untuk Penguasaan Kosakata Bahasa Inggris Bagi Anak-Anak Di Lingkungan XII Kelurahan Tegal Sari”. Adapun tahapan yang dilakukan pada kegiatan pendampingan ini adalah mempersiapkan buku kosakata bergambar dwi bahasa, pelaksanaan kegiatan pendampingan bagi anak-anak, lalu dilanjutkan dengan tahap evaluasi berupa pelaksanaan tes tertulis dan wawancara bagi anak-anak setelah mengikuti kegiatan pendampingan. Setelah diadakan evaluasi, dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa kegiatan ini berdampak positif bagi anak-anak di Lingkungan XII Keluarahan Tegal Sari, berdasarkan hasil tes tertulis menunjukkan beberapa anak dapat menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan tes berupa kosakata dalam bahasa Inggris dengan baik. Selain itu, melalui hasil wawancara juga didapatkan pendapat bahwa anak-anak menyukai buku kosakata bergambar Dwi Bahasa yang ditampilkan dalam kegiatan pendampingan, dikarenakan buku tersebut memiliki gambar dan warna yang menarik.
