-Vital archives are vital records and also records the class that requires special treatment both in terms of security and protection, because the information it has is closely related to the existence and survival of the organization. Therefore, there is no reason whats-over for the organization to ignore the existence of these vital records. Vital records protection is a preventive action performed before the occurrence of an event that affects the damaged and destruction of records. This is what lies behind the author to reveal about the protection of vital records at the National Library and Regional Archives in Yogyakarta. As this study aims to determine the general protection of vital records at the National Library and Regional Archives in Yogyakarta. Based on the results of this study concluded that, protection of archives vital con-ducted by the National Library and Regional Archives in Yogyakarta, which prefer the physical archive vital itself to remain intact saved and survived the disaster, and archive vital is stored on each work unit always use it.

ABSTRAKKegiatan preservasi semakin perlu mendapat perhatian khusus. Boleh dikatakan, dalam lingkungan digital, kegiatan preservasi ini mutlak, terutama mengingat pertumbuhan produk digital yang amat pesat, dan penggunaan komputer di masyarakat yang semakin meluas. Dalam konteks ini maka semua jenis preservasi, termasuk preservasi digital di perpustakaan, adalah kegiatan yang terencana dan terkelola untuk memastikan agar sebuah objek (koleksi) digital dapat terus dipakai dan diakses selama mungkin. Adapun penelitian ini secara umum bertujuan untuk mengetahui strategi preservasi digital dan tantangan yang dihadapi dalam melakukan preservasi digital di Perpustakaan UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa, strategi preservasi digital yang dilakukan yaitu strategi preservasi teknologi, strategi back up, strategi migrasi dan format ulang, serta strategi penyegaran. Adapun tantangan yang dihadapi dalam melaksanakan preservasi digital, yaitu informasi dalam bentuk digital sulit bertahan dalam jangka waktu lama, file yang dipreservasi terkena serangan virus dan hacker, file koleksi digital rusak, dan materi koleksi digital hilang secara tiba-tiba dan tanpa bekas.Kata kunci: Strategi, preservasi, preservasi digital, perpustakaan digital, TI (teknologi informasi) ABSTRACT Preservation activities increasingly need special attention.
