Personal Status Laws were the subject of a round table discussion held at the Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World in January 2005. The participants were Dr. Bechir Bilani, Attorney at law, Mohammad Matar, Attorney at law, Ahmad El-Zein, Attorney at law, Judge Arlette Juraysati, and Dr. Ibrahim Najjar. The moderator was Dr. Najla Hamadeh. Also present were Dr. Dima Dabbous-Sensenig, Acting Director of the Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World, and Myriam Sfeir, Assistant Editor of Al-Raida.
In Lebanon there are no more than ten doctors specialized in Geriatric medicine. Dr. Thuraya Arayssi is the only Geriatric specialist at the American University Medical Center (AUB -MC). I live, along with my family, in Camp Aida for Refugees in Bethlehem in the West Bank. It is a small camp built by UNRWA to accommodate the displaced refugees of 1948. I was brought up in a big family, I have eight brothers and three sisters. Our house was small given that we were extremely poor. My father was the main breadwinner in the family; however, all of us had to work hard when still young in order to earn our livelihood.
Confusion may be inevitable when it comes to personal relations: so much of it is based on nuance, anyway. But it's also true that sexual harassment law, perhapsmore than most, is constantly evolving as each new case comes before the courts and establishes new precedents. Thus, what today would be a perfectly obvious (and winnable) case of harassment of a woman loses her job because she won't sleep with her boss was far from obvious to judges in the early I 970s.
