Abstmct-We investigate the performance of single and multiple parity codes in magnetic recording systems. We evaluate the codes with respect t o Bit Error Rate as well as ECC failure rate. While multiple parity codes outperform the single parity code in Bit Error Rate, their performance is worse with respect to the ECC failure rate.

The hard disk drive (HDD) market continues its growth of more than 60% per year in area density. Use of higher spindle rotational speeds is also a HDD market trend over recent years. A combination of these two factors require resad channel speed increases in excess of 40% annually to keep up with the HDD requirements.
