The existing literature suggests that theories and models can serve as valuable frameworks for the design and evaluation of health interventions. However, evidence on the use of theories and models in social marketing interventions is sparse. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify to what extent papers about social marketing health interventions report using theory, which theories are most commonly used, and how theory was used. A systematic search was conducted for articles that reported social marketing interventions for the prevention or management of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, HIV, STDs, and tobacco use, and behaviors related to reproductive health, physical activity, nutrition, and smoking cessation. Articles were published in English, after 1990, reported an evaluation, and met the 6 social marketing benchmarks criteria (behavior change, consumer research, segmentation and targeting, exchange, competition and marketing mix). Twenty-four articles, describing 17 interventions, met the inclusion criteria. Of these 17 interventions, 8 reported using theory and 7 stated how it was used. The transtheoretical model/stages of change was used more often than other theories. Findings highlight an ongoing lack of use or underreporting of the use of theory in social marketing campaigns and reinforce the call to action for applying and reporting theory to guide and evaluate interventions.
The global refugee crisis is a complex humanitarian problem. Service researchers can assist in solving this crisis because refugees are immersed in complex human service systems. Drawing on marketing, sociology, transformative service, and consumer research literature, this study develops a Transformative Refugee Service Experience Framework to enable researchers, service actors, and public policy makers to navigate the challenges faced throughout a refugee’s service journey. The primary dimensions of this framework encompass the spectrum from hostile to hospitable refugee service systems and the resulting suffering or well-being in refugees’ experiences. The authors conceptualize this at three refugee service journey phases (entry, transition, and exit) and at three refugee service system levels (macro, meso, and micro) of analysis. The framework is supported by brief examples from a range of service-related refugee contexts as well as a Web Appendix with additional cases. Moreover, the authors derive a comprehensive research agenda from the framework, with detailed research questions for public policy and (service) marketing researchers. Managerial directions are provided to increase awareness of refugee service problems; stimulate productive interactions; and improve collaboration among public and nonprofit organizations, private service providers, and refugees. Finally, this work provides a vision for creating hospitable refugee service systems.
The purpose of this study is to develop improved understanding of how value is created at the midstream (meso) level in a collaborative smokefree homes and cars social marketing programme. The study adopts a qualitative approach including interviews and observation.The findings show that the co-creative organisational model adopted for the Smokefree programme affords access to resources and capabilities of midstream actors and provides opportunities for reshaping and mobilising existing value networks. The focal organisation has a key role in coordinating, connecting actors and providing resources to facilitate value co-creation at the network level. The study illustrates that the service interaction allowed for customer centred cues for action which took into account their context and the existence/lack of resources for value creation. The implications of this study are discussed, in particular in terms of the role of focal organisations in managing value networks, the social context, configurational fit and resources of actors involved in community based social marketing and the need for policies and practices to provide health professionals with role support for health promotion.
Over the last decade, social marketing has moved away from traditional marketing management approaches towards service-oriented theory, integrating concepts from other disciplines, to account for the distinctive nature of social change and develop an ecological perspective. This article extends prior literature by interrogating the applicability of service-dominant logic (SDL) to social marketing, with a particular emphasis on how a systems perspective can offer new ways to address challenges of social change. In so doing, it examines how the social marketing benchmarks can be extended through applying (and adapting) the principles, concepts and theories of SDL. The article provides critical reflection on the challenges of transferring servicedominant theory to social change contexts highlighting implications for practice and a future research agenda.
The marketing mix is a key component of social marketing providing one of the differential points in bringing about behavior and social change. There is a dearth of information regarding the strategies used for the mix in social marketing interventions. This systematic review identifies the strategies used in the social marketing mix, product, price, place, promotion, policy, and partnerships, and their associated outcomes, in health behavior change interventions. A systematic literature search was conducted for peer-reviewed articles published in English from 1990 to 2009 that reported social marketing interventions addressing disease prevention, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, HIV, STDs, reproductive health, physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco. Articles must have identified at least 3 of the Ps of the marketing mix, reported the evaluation, and met the 6 social marketing benchmarks criteria. Twenty-four studies describing 17 interventions met the inclusion criteria. The complete marketing mix was identifiable in 5 interventions. Strategies such as removing perceived barriers, using the Internet for placement, applying innovative promotion, involving communities, and supporting policies were identified as current practices. The results identified a number of strategies that showed potential for the marketing mix with important implications for practice.
