There is an increase use of wireless technologies in education all over the world. In fact, wireless technologies such as laptop computers, palmtop computers and mobile phones are revolutionising education and transforming the traditional classroom-based learning and teaching into anytime and anywhere education. This paper investigates the use of wireless technologies in education with particular reference to the potential of learning new technical English language words using Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging. The system, developed by the authors, called mobile learning tool (MOLT), has been tested with 45 1st-year undergraduate students. The knowledge of students before and after the experiment has been measured. Our results show that students enjoyed and learned new words with the help of their mobile phones. We believe that using the MOLT system as an educational tool will contribute to the success of students.
IntroductionThere has been significant interest and growth in the number of institutions using mobile devices to support learning and teaching. Mobile learning, or m-learning for short, is a new concept, and is very closely related to e-learning. Stone (2004) defines m-learning as a 'special type of e-learning, bound by a number of special properties and the capability of devices, bandwidth and other characteristics of the network technologies being used '. Milrad (2003) defines e-learning as 'learning supported by digital electronic tools and media', and m-learning as 'e-learning using mobile devices and wireless transmission'.
The topic of this paper is to describe the development of an interactive application that can be used in teaching English as a second language using children's stories in mobile devices. The aim of this experimental study has been to find out the potential of using the developed interactive mobile application in improving the learning skills such as vocabulary, pronunciation, listening and comprehension of the learners of the English language without the help of a teacher. The novelty of the research in this paper has been the use of a speech recognition engine on the mobile phone to identify spoken words of the learner in an attempt to teach correct pronunciation of words. The learning is interactive and it takes place entirely on a mobile phone. In this experimental study 37 voluntary students have participated. A Pre‐Test and a Post‐Test have been performed to find out the learning abilities of students. The results of the experimental study clearly indicated that English learning skills of young students had higher statistically significant improvements as a result of using the developed application in the experimental group. It can be concluded that the developed mobile application can be used as an educational tool in teaching English as a second language. Young students who may be interested in improving their listening, vocabulary, comprehension and pronunciation skills while learning English as a second language should find this mobile application enjoyable and useful.
The technology has been advancing rapidly recently and it has become necessary to use technology in the education sector. Because of this it has become necessary to re-organize the education sector. The needs of both students and teachers are also changing. Teachers need to prepare their lecture notes in the most effective way and in the shortest time. For the students the requirement has been to remove the time and space concept and encourage them for self-study. The educational institutions on the other hand are seeking to provide the maximum level of education with minimum level of investment. LMS seems to be at the top of the latest technological advancements that will satisfy all the requirements of teachers and students. The author has prepared this paper with the aim of giving general information about LMS systems, and in addition to describe all the aspects of LMS systems such as their general structure, types, and so on. In particular, the highly popular Moodle LMS system is described in greater detail.
