Cultured murine disc-derived cells have the capacity to secrete proinflammatory cytokines and interleukin-10 in the absence of inflammatory cells. This finding supports the hypothesis that disc-derived cells are capable of initiating or amplifying an inflammatory process.

Patients with lumbar osteomyelitis necessitating surgery can undergo combined, same-day surgery either in a sequential or simultaneous manner. This is a safe and efficient way to control the infection and stabilize the affected segments, allowing for early mobilization of these sick elderly patients.

A prospective study of 295 infantry recruits has shown that the mediolateral width of the tibia measured radiographically at each of three different levels in the bone had a statistically significant correlation with the total incidence of stress fractures as well as with those in the tibia alone or the femur alone. A narrow tibial width was shown to be a risk factor, but cortical thickness was not found to be significant.
