In order to elicit correlates of Maruyama's (1992) mindscape types, 144 respondents from Germany, the Netherlands and the Republic of Georgia (70 men, 74 women, 48 from each country) were given TOB figures and mindscape pictures. Furthermore, their attitudes towards two technology items (high-speed trains and nuclear power) were registered. An optimal scaling procedure (OVERALS) was used for analyzing the cultural and gender-specific differences with regard to the mindscape types. Group differences in the high-tech attitudes were tested by means of Chi-square analyses. The meaning of the results is discussed from the viewpoints of hypothesis testing as contrasted to the construction of an open-ended taxonomy.
1908 August war was short but claimed many lives. Thousands have been displaced due to combat and bombing. Separation from the native places had a long lasting and severe effect on the well-being of population. Qualitative study was carried out to describe and measure the emotional reaction to war and displacement. Analysis of 5 minutes length narratives of the displaced population registered after 10 and 15 months from displacement by Gottshalk-Gleser method revealed high level of six types of anxiety measured by scales. The comparison of anxiety scores over time points at the persistence of negative emotional state induced by the war and at the importance of displacement, reflected both in number of references to displacement and separation anxiety scale scores.
81 subjects from Tbilisi (Republic of Georgia; 37 men, 44 women) with an age range from 27 to 35 years were asked to report past and future life events. Taking into account I-E control convictions, the basic hypothesis was that internals and externals would differ in a number of life
event variables. Tests were performed in regard to the number of events reported, the time span covered by the reports, and evaluation of the life events. These tests supported the basic hypothesis to a great extent. An explorative data analysis technique was applied to describe individual
differences in the usage of different event categories. Most of the results could be interpreted within the existing theoretical frame of reference for I-E control convictions. Results of the explorative part of the study are useful for further hypothesis generation and cross- validation attempts.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
