<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Pomegranate is known as a functional food which has multiple health-promoting activities. It has been assessed for patients with metabolic syndrome. Specifically, an antidiabetic activity of its juice and plausible mechanisms for its action have been shown in multitudinous studies. The aim of this study was assessing the effects of complementary treatment with pomegranate seed powder (PSP) oral supplementation on patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Sixty patients were treated for 8 weeks by 5 g PSP or placebo, twice daily. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol, and triglyceride (TG) were recorded as the outcome measures at the beginning and after the intervention. The findings were analyzed using the independent <i>t</i> test and Mann-Whitney U test. <b><i>Results:</i></b> After 8 weeks, the mean differences of FBG, HbA1c, cholesterol, and TG were significantly decreased in the PSP group when compared with the placebo group (<i>p</i> value <0.05). In addition, post-intervention values of FBG and HbA1c were significantly lower in patients treated with PSP compared to the placebo group (<i>p</i> values = 0.02 and 0.01, respectively). However, the latter comparison regarding cholesterol and TG showed no significant differences (<i>p</i> values = 0.51 and 0.26, respectively). <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> It seems that complementary treatment with PSP may have beneficial effects on FBG and HbA1c of patients with T2DM. However, its effect on TG and cholesterol was equivocal.
BackgroundMigraine headache prevalence and triggers in type2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were investigated in previous studies but the results are contradictory. Therefore, in this study we examined the prevalence of migraine headache in diabetic patients in comparison with non-diabetic persons and its predisposing factors in 2014.MethodsWe enrolled 147 volunteer patients with T2DM and 150 healthy persons referred to the Yazd Diabetes Research Center and the Central Laboratory of Yazd, respectively, in 2014. The data collection instrument was a self-conducted checklist. The checklist contained demographic, anthropometric and clinical characteristics and migraine diagnostic questions according to International Classification of Headache Disorders Second Edition (ICHD-II) criteria. We compared prevalence of migraine between two groups, and also evaluated relationship between above characteristics and migraine prevalence in both groups.ResultsThe prevalence of migraine in participants of diabetic and non-diabetic was 27.9 and 26 %, respectively (p-value = .406). The prevalence of migraine headache among in diabetic persons was significantly correlated with family history of migraine, diabetes duration and hypoglycemia attacks. Also, the migraine prevalence was significant more prevalent in T2DM patients with duration 6–10 years (p-value = 0.031). The percentage of HbA1C, type of anti-diabetic medication, BMI value and age in diabetic patients did not show any significant association with migraine.ConclusionAlthough we observed no significant differences in prevalence of migraine between patients with T2DM and non-diabetic age and sex adjusted persons But, the occurrence of hypoglycemia attacks and T2DM duration were related to migraine prevalence. Decreasing hypoglycemia among long-time T2DM patients probably can decline migraine headache in this group of patients.
Background: Identifying risk factors of breast cancer is a key point for preventive strategies to reduce the incidence. The aim of current study was to determine most important risk factors for breast cancer in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) using a systematic review. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science till August 24, 2012 and the reference lists of all included studies were searched. Analytic studies which had reported odds ratios (OR), relative risk (RR) or required data to calculate them were included. A total of 343 studies were critically appraised and finally 30 studies were meta-analyzed. Heterogeneity between the studies was assessed by I² and Cochran's Q. Egger's test was used to assess publication bias. Results: Twenty five casecontrol studies, one nested case-control and four cohort studies were included. The largest ORs were obtained for history of no live birth (2.25; 95%CI: 1.58-3.18), body mass index (BMI) more than 30 (2.21; 95%CI: 1.71-2.36), age at first pregnancy more than 30 years old (1.52; 95%CI: 1.30-1.77) and meat consumption more than three times per week (1.39; 95%CI: 1.03-1.87). The other important predictors were higher education and smoking as risk factors, physical activity and ovulatory stimulating medication as protective factors. Conclusions: The most important predictors of breast cancer in EMR were history of no live birth, BMI more than 30, age at first pregnancy more than 30 years old, physical inactivity and smoking. Almost all these risk factors are consistent with known risk factors for this cancer in other parts of the world.
Purpose Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a heterogeneous group of metabolic disorders characterized by chronic hyperglycemia that results by relative or absolute insulin deficiency. Hearing disorders is common otological disorders in diabetic patients. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of hearing impairment among DM patients and its association with diabetes complications and blood sugar control. Methods This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from 2016 to 2017 on 81 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), aged 40-65 years who were referred to Yazd diabetic research center. Air conduction pure tone hearing thresholds were obtained for each ear at frequencies of 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 Hz. We defined hearing impairment as the pure-tone average ≥ 25 dB hearing level of pure-tone thresholds at low frequencies (500; 1000; and 2000 Hz) and high frequencies (4000 and 8000 Hz. The demographic data and diabetes complications frequency were gathered. All statistical analysis was done in SPSS 22. Results The mean (±SD) age of participants was 56.38 ± 5.68 years (range 40-65 years), 32(39.5%) were males and 49(60.5%) were females. The prevalence of hearing loss in high frequency in right ear was higher in male (p value = 0.047). The grade of diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy were significantly associated with hearing impairment in high frequency in both ears (p value<0.05). Finally, the results showed that even after adjustment of confounding variables using logistic regression analysis there were no relationship between hearing impairment and variables in both ears. Conclusion The hearing impairment was associated with diabetes complications as retinopathy and nephropathy. The association was significant in high frequency.
