Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections are estimated to occur in 0.2%-0.5% of all live births in Germany. 1 They are the most frequent non-genetic cause of developmental delays 2 and sensorineural hearing loss 3 in the Western world. Congenital CMV infections are clinically silent in approximately 90% of affected newborn infants. 4,5 Therefore, suspicion often only arises later in infancy or childhood.
