Several oil palm sustainable certification schemes have been introduced in Malaysia such as MPOB Codes of Good Agricultural Practices (MPOB CoGAP) Certification, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification, and Malaysia Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) Certification. All these certifications have been successfully accepted in many of the oil palm estates except the ISH. There is a big challenge to certify the Malaysian ISH because they are lack farm management practice. Therefore, Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) has introduced the individual sustainable certification to the ISH, which is known as Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) certification. This paper's main objectives are to identify the GAP acceptance level (compliant, partial-compliant, and non-compliant) recommended by MPOB and determine the factors affecting GAP certification acceptance among the ISH in Malaysia. This study was conducted in all states in Malaysia, and the data were collected from a total of 400 respondents selected through the Proportionate Random Sampling Method. The results showed that 58% of the ISH partially comply by receiving the GAP certificate. while only 26% fulfilled the requirements, thus eligible for GAP certification. Two factors that significantly influenced the GAP compliance among the ISH were the respondents' education level and the age of palm oil plantation. The results of this study indicated that GAP on fertiliser application and record-keeping were adopted by the ISH and significantly affecting their compliant level of MPOB GAP Certification among ISH.
Koperasi Penanam Sawit Mampan (KPSM) or in English known as Sustainable Oil Palm Growers Cooperative has been established since 2010. KPSM is an alternative model that can meet the needs of oil palm independent smallholders (ISH) and play a role in helping to improve community development. The main objective of this cooperative is to improve the income of independent oil palm smallholders. The objective of the implementation of the study was to identify the customer satisfaction level towards the FFB sales service operated by KPSM. This study involved independent oil palm smallholders who sent fresh fruit bunches (FFB) to KPSM cooperative collection centres. Questionnaires were distributed to 330 respondents and sampling was carried out by random sampling. The data were analysed using SPSS to analyse the quantitative data, which covered frequencies and percentages. The study findings indicated that the majority of respondents were KPSM members (61.9%), who cultivated palm full time, (69.6%) with an average age of 46 years old. The study also proved that the smallholders’ satisfaction level who received the services provided by the cooperative, was very good. However, customer satisfaction in terms of infrastructure amenities was less satisfactory, and the findings from this study were hoped to be able to assist various parties to improve the quality of services provided by KPSM.
Almost one million hectares of oil palm in Malaysia have been planted by the oil palm independent smallholders (OPISH). Most of these farms are small size holding and scatters throughout Malaysia. These factors cause them to face several problems and consequently put their income below potential. To assist the OPISH, the government had introduced the oil palm grower cooperative known as Koperasi Penanam Sawit Mampan (KPSM). The objective of KPSM is to increase the oil palm yield, OPISH incomes, and as a platform of interaction between OPISH and extension officers to discuss their problems. However, cooperatives' performance can be influenced by several factors. This paper aims to study the extension officer and members' participation as independent variables. Good governance is incorporated as a moderator variable to investigate a cooperative's performance. The partial least squares (PLS 3.0) and structural equation modelling instruments are used to analyse the data in this study. Most of the respondents are male, and 22% are of the younger generation. The results demonstrated that good governance (p-value of 0.095(p<0.1) and t=1.669 (more than 1.64) has a moderate relationship between members' participation and cooperatives' performance. On the other hand, good governance did not strengthen the relationship between the extension officer and co-operatives performance.
