Effect of phenacylpyridinium bromide (1a) and p-chlorophenacylpyridinium bromide (1b) was investigated on the soil bacterial population by plate dilution method. Based on the average total bacterial count at different concentrations of salts, it was observed that salt 1b was more bactericidal than salt 1a and deleterious effectivity increased with the increasing level. The greater antibacterial effect of salt 1b may probably be attributed to the presence of chlorine atom attached to benzene ring.
Air pollution tolerance index (APTI) was calculated for various plant species growing in industrial area of Orai. The leaf samples collected from 24 tree species in the industrial area were used to determine their Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI) by calculating the ascorbic acid, chlorophyll, pH and relative water contents. The APTI values of less than 16 are reported in 19 species and they can be used as indicators of air pollution. The species Ficus religiosa (24.92), Zizyphus jujuba (21.84), Phyllanthus emblica (17.40), Cassia fistula (17.67) and Tamarindus indica (16.96) showed their moderate response by changing their biochemical contents and were identified as moderately tolerant to air pollution.
Physico-chemical characteristics of Parichha dam reservoir of Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh have been studied. The water temperature varied between 23.0 to 37.00C. The transparency, pH, chlorides and total hardness were in the range of 100 to 145 cm, 7.8 to 9.2, 42.0 to 59.17 mg/l and 100-197 mg/l respectively. The total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen and total dissolved solids ranged between 193 to 389, 5.2 to 8.6 and 90 to 310 mg/l respectively. The study revealed that the reservoir water is suitable for fisheries.
Allelopathic effect of three accessions of Jatropha curcas on four field crops viz. Triticum aestivum, Raphanus sativus, Linum usitatissimum and Lens esculenta through bioassy was studied in laboratory. The level of inhibition of aqueous leaf extract of J. curcas varied with its accessions and type of tested field crops. The tolerance of the crops was in order of Lens esculenta > T. aestivum > Raphanus sativus > Linum usitatissimum. Invariably, maximum inhibition was observed in the higher concentrations of aqueous extract.
