Wastewater from pharmaceutical industries of jelly coatings for colored pills presents elevated color, turbidity, and high organic content. It must be treated before disposal, according to Brazilian public regulations. Bench experiments were conducted to remove color. The most promising results (87.5 % removal) were obtained using advanced oxidation processes followed by coagulation, flocculation and flotation. Evaluation of a full scale treatment plant also allowed the identification of azo pigments as the main cause effluent color and for the resistance to the conventional biological treatment. Also, a more efficient sequence of reactors to improve the evaluated wastewater treatment plant has been proposed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
