There is controversy over whether the cobalt binder of liquidphase sintered WC forms a continuous skin over the WC particles or whether the carbide grains form a continuous skeleton. It is shown that the atomic ColW ratio in the 20-A grain boundaries is >3 times larger than that in the grains, supporting the former model.
