This study intends to determine the statistical literacy levels of pre-service mathematics teachers and to evaluate the contribution of the statistics courses in the elementary mathematics education curriculum to statistical literacy. A mixed methods research design was adopted. The study group consisted of 202 pre-service mathematics teachers enrolled in the Statistics and Probability course. In the data collection process, a pre-test and post-test was administered to determine the pre-service teachers' statistical literacy before and after the statistical course, and classroom observations were performed to identify the contribution of the statistics course to statistical literacy. The Rasch model was used for validity-reliability analyses, and one-way ANOVA tests were used to analyze the quantitative data. Content analysis was utilized in the analysis of qualitative data, which revealed that statistical literacy levels of pre-service teachers are generally low, generally influencing the competence of pre-service teachers. The pre-service teachers failed in the sample selection component in the pretest and data interpretation in the post-test, while they were more successful with table and graphs in the pre-test and sample selection in the post-test. The comparative analysis of revealed statistically significant differences in favor of U4 in the pre-test, but in favor of U1 in the post-test. It was concluded that practices included in the statistics lessons could be effective on these differences.
The ‘technology integrated assessment process’ is an innovative method to capture and determine students’ understanding of mathematics. This assessment process is claimed to provide a singular dynamism for teaching and learning activities and it is also claimed to be of the most important elements of instruction in the educational system. In this sense, this study aims to investigate technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) of prospective mathematics teachers regarding the ‘evaluation’ and ‘assessment’ process. To achieve this aim, the method of qualitative research was conducted with 20 teachers. Video records and lesson plans were collected and a Mathematics Teacher TPACK Development Model was utilized to reveal themes and key features of the data. The findings revealed that, although the majority of teachers stated that they would like to use technology-integrated tools in the assessment and evaluation processes, they strongly preferred to use traditional assessment and evaluation techniques, such as pen and paper activities, multiple-choice questions in virtual environments, etc. Hence, the evidence suggests that teachers would be unable to use appropriately the technological assessment process in order to reveal students’ understanding of mathematics. As seen from the teachers’ lectures, they perceived that technology would be suitable for evaluation and assessment but in a limited way. Bu çalışmanın amacı ilköğretim matematik öğretmen adaylarının Teknopedagojik eğitim yeterliklerinin ve performans göstergelerinin incelenmesidir. Bu çalışmada öğretmen adaylarının sayılar ve işlemler, cebir, geometri ve ölçme, veri işleme ve olasılık öğrenme alanlarında GeoGebra, Cabri3D ve Tinkerplots gibi farklı dinamik matematik yazılımları kullanılarak hazırlanılan teknoloji destekli ders anlatımları incelenmiştir. 2013-2014 güz ve bahar yarıyıllarında Karadeniz Bölgesi'nde bir devlet üniversitesinde ilköğretim matematik öğretmenliği 3. sınıfında öğrenim gören 24 öğretmen adayı ile yürütülen bu çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemi ile desenlenmiştir. Öğretmen adaylarının ders anlatımlarının video kaydı alınmış ve çözümlemesi yapılmıştır. Video kayıtlarının çözümlenmesi ve adayların ders planlarından elde edilen veriler Teknopedagojik eğitim yeterliklerinden öğretim sürecini yürütme ve problem çözme yeterlik alanlarına göre analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda, öğretmen adaylarının teknolojileri konunun ilk kez öğretiminde keşfettirici bir araç olarak kullandıkları, kavram yanılgılarını gidermeye yönelik teknoloji destekli etkinlikler hazırladıkları ancak, ölçme değerlendirme sürecinde teknoloji kullanmakta zorlandıkları sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
