BackgroundMedulloepithelioma is a rare primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the central nervous system, usually developing in childhood. Due to its rarity, the optimal management is still unknown. The prognosis is poor, especially when resection is incomplete. Adjuvant radiochemotherapy is often indicated.Case presentationWe report a rare case of infratentorial medulloepithelioma in a 3 year old girl. She presented symptoms of increased intracranial pressure. On examination, she had coordination problems, ptosis and exotropia of the right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a large cerebellar vermix tumor. Immuno-histochemistry revealed a diffuse positivity for Vimentin and focal positivity for the epithelial membrane antigen, but Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein and Synaptophysin were negative, the MIB-1 antibody was very high. She received postoperative craniospinal irradiation and died 7 months later.ConclusionWe describe the features (epidemiological, clinical, histological, immunohistochemical and therapeutic outcomes) of our case and confront it to literature data.
Background. Lifestyle maintenance is a crucial condition before and after lung cancer disease. According to the previous research in the scientific databases, the effect of the interaction between socioeconomic and demographic factors on the lifestyle of lung cancer patients in Southern Morocco regions remains unexamined. Accordingly, this study was designed to examine the relationship between socioeconomic factors, demographic factors, and the lifestyle of lung cancer patients. Methods. A total of 133 patients with lung cancer were divided into 103 men and 30 women with a sex ratio of 3.43 and ages varying between 28 and 82 years, and they served as informants for the study and filled in a questionnaire to provide information on their sociodemographic background, various economic characteristics, and their lifestyle. These patients have also been submitted to an anthropometric examination following the standardized procedure recommended by the World Health Organization. The survey was conducted from July 2013 to March 2015 at the Oncology and Radiotherapy Department, at Mohammed VI Hospital Center in Marrakech, Morocco. Results. The preliminary results showed that the average age of patients was 59 ± 9 years. A proportion of 81% lived in the Marrakech-Safi region and 19% lived in four other southern regions. Among the patients, 6% were smokers, while 14% were nonsmokers and 80% were ex smokers. Following the discovery of the disease, 26% revealed that they had sleep disorders and 98% were reported to have a lack of appetite. Obesity, normal weight, and underweight were also taken as criteria to categorize the patients; thus, obese informants represented 23% of the total number, those having normal weight reached 67% and the patients having underweight represented 10%. Conclusion. Sociodemographic variables and various economic characteristics were shown to have a negative impact on the lifestyle of lung cancer patients.
Breast cancer in young women is increasing. The objective of this work was to analyze the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and prognostic characteristics of breast cancer in young women under 40 years. Through a retrospective study spread over five years from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2012 and held at the Radiation Oncology Service of the University Hospital Mohammed VI Marrakech, we identified 272 cases of breast cancer in patients aged 40 years and under. The frequency of breast cancer in young women under 40 years was 24.42%. The average age was 35.6 years. The pauciparity and nulliparity were predominant (60.6%). 8 % had a family history of breast cancer. The self-examination of a nodule was predominant (93%). Tumors classified T2 were the most frequent (45%), followed by T4 tumors (29%).17% were metastatic immediately with predominant hepatic localizations (37.6%). It was Invasive breast carcinoma no special type (NST) in 82.3% of cases, with a predominance of SBR grades II and III (96%). Hormone receptors were positive in 68% of cases and HER2 overexpressed in 29 % of cases. 218 patients underwent surgery, which was radical in 68% and conservative in 21%. 149 had a locoregional irradiation. 71% received adjuvant chemotherapy with a predominance of FAC60 protocol (35%). Hormonotherapy was prescribed in 78% of cases with positive hormone receptors and trastuzumab in 73.8 % of patients over expressing HER2. After a median follow-up of 8.1 months, 41.4 % had relapses. Overall survival at three years was 70%, and the relapse free survival was 62%. Our study joins the data in the literature advocating more advanced forms and worse prognosis of breast cancer in young patients.
