A major difficulty in the design process of a local dimming system is to ensure a high image quality without annoying artifacts for any image content, with a high power saving at the same time. To solve this problem, a feedback method is proposed which dynamically adapts the control parameters of a local dimming system, based on the evaluation of criteria for the visual quality of the dimmed image. With these means a nearly constant visual quality for any image content can be achieved with high power savings of over 41 %. In addition, a second method is presented which allows the display system to reach a desired mean power saving with the highest possible visual quality.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
