Despite a significant fall in the number of cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) since the early 1990s, it remains one of the leading causes of infant mortality in the UK ( Office for National Statistics, 2014 ). National postnatal care guidelines ( National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2014 ) have recently been amended to ensure key health professionals, including health visitors, inform all families and carers about the association between co-sleeping and SIDS. Health visitors play a unique role in supporting families to make informed decisions about safer infant sleeping. This paper draws on published literature to describe what is known about health visiting practice and analyses how this is used to prevent SIDS.
