The WHO performance status was excellent for all patients. Thirty-seven were classified as T1-T2 and 38 were N0. All of them except one were treated with curative intent. Treatment failures were observed in 25 patients (48%). Four patients could be successfully salvaged after SCCOT recurrence or progression. The disease-free survival (DFS) was 52% at 5 years. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was 64%. Factors that affected the OS were invasion of the floor (p=0.009), cross over of the midline (p=0.02), positive lymph nodes (p=0.02), and the lack of disease control (p=0.0001).
Lauric acid hydroxylation and aminopyrine N-demethylation were studied in kidney and liver microsomes from rats treated with fish oil. Different doses of fish oil containing 20% eicosapentaenoic acid and 10% docosahexaenoic acid were provided daily to the rats for seven days. In all the groups studied, the lauric acid metabolism was higher in kidney microsomes and the aminopyrine metabolism in the liver microsomes. Although no effect on the renal cytochrome P-450 concentration was detectable, all four fish oil doses increased the hepatic concentration of cytochrome P-450 by a mean 27%. The higher fish oil doses used increased the renal and hepatic microsomal metabolism of aminopyrine. The lauric acid metabolism was increased by fish oil only in the liver. Fish oil, a known inducer of fatty acid peroxisomal beta-oxidation, also induced microsomal activity. These results show that liver and kidney respond in different ways to dietary factors such as fish oil. In addition, our study would suggest that fish oil increased the activity of two different families of liver cytochrome P-450. The activity of kidney lauric acid 11- and 12-hydroxylation, however, was not modulated by fish oil.
The Oscura experiment will lead the search for low-mass dark matter particles using a very large array of novel silicon Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs) with a threshold of two electrons and with a total exposure of 30 kg-yr. The R&D effort, which began in FY20, is currently entering the design phase with the goal of being ready to start construction in late 2024. Oscura will have unprecedented sensitivity to sub-GeV dark matter particles that interact with electrons, probing dark matter-electron scattering for masses down to ∼500 keV and dark matter being absorbed by electrons for masses down to ∼1 eV. The Oscura R&D effort has made some significant progress on the main technical challenges of the experiment, of which the most significant are engaging new foundries for the fabrication of the CCD sensors, developing a cold readout solution, and understanding the experimental backgrounds.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
