The first group of fully characterised mesogenic (€,€)-I ,4-diarylbuta-I ,3-dienes, substituted in the para-position of one aryl ring by an alkoxy-group and in the para-position of the other aryl group by a cyano-or halogeno-group has been prepared by a Wadsworth-Emmons procedure; their physical properties of high birefringence and low viscosity i n combination make them particularly suitable for use in liquid crystal display devices when mixed with known liquid crystalline materials.
A group of (€,€)-1.4-diarylbuta-l,3-dienes, substituted in the para-position of one aryl ring by an alkoxy-group and in the para-position of the other aryl group by a cyano-or halogeno-group have been synthesised. The compounds are mesogenic and their physical properties make them suitable for liquid crystal display devices when mixed with known liquid crystal materials.Paper 2/065 1 8E
The cyclohex-2-en-1-one unit flanked by one or more aryl rings is shown to provide a new system which can exhibit liquid crystal properties; these new mesogens contain a chiral centre which is both adjacent to a lateral dipolar carbonyl group and is also located in the central core.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
