Ingol is one of a recent new class [1] of macrocyclic diterpenes which have been isolated from plants of the genus Euphorbia and the stereochemistry of the tetraacetate has been elucidated by X-ray methods [2]. It has been suggested that these derivatives are the biosynthetic precursors [3] of the tumour-promoting and pro-in-Jlammatory [4] phorbol group of compounds, which arc the well-known toxic constituents of Euphorbia species [5].
